This week on Satellite Nation Brian and I will be joined by Mario Filippi to discuss the latest happenings in SDR(Software Defined Radio). Most hobbies end up costing tons of money. SDR on the other hand can be quite inexpensive to get started. If you own a computer, as most people do these days....then all you need to do is purchase a USB dongle w/ small antenna for less than $20 bucks. Download some free software and away you go. Getting a better outdoor antenna and running coax into the house will add to the expense, but you can still keep it under $100 dollars. What exactly is SDR though? Mario Filippi, call sign N2HUN is a shortwave listener, ham operator and scanner enthusiast for over 37 years and enjoys listening to anything found DC to daylight. He's had more radios than shoes and is most comfortable when spinning a radio dial to seek out signals of interest, whether it be it a CB freebander, a local EMS responder on VHF, a shortwave utility like WWVH from Hawaii, a distant digital TV station during a tropo opening, or a weather facsimile broadcast from the US Coast Guard. In addition he is a free-lance writer on a number of radio related subjects such as dongle-SDR radios and has given presentations on this subject at the Annual Trenton Computer Festival and various ham radio clubs. And he also is an FTA enthusiast to boot!
