The only thing that I have personally been able to do is put pictures on my 722 can anything else be viewed on the 722 such as videos or other files? What is the max amount of space set aside for the a connection from USB? The pictures are downloaded on the hard drive, and not played from the thumb drive. Has anyone else messed around with this?

You can not use the Flash Drives to do anything but transfer Pictures to the 722's hard Drive.

If you wish to use the USB port to offload stored TV Programing from the Internal Hard drive of the receiver then you will have to purchase at least a 40 Gig USB2 drive and pay Dish a fee for enabling that feature. You can connect upto a Terabyte Drive for external archiving.

Up to how many pictures, what is the space set aside for this?

I'm not sure what the actual limit is.

You will likely be disappointed by the display resolution of this feature. Currently the firmware limits the displayed resolution to roughly 700x400. I'd use the feature if the firmware took advantage of the resolution of the connected TV's Actual resolution, alas it does NOT.

You'd be better off connecting a Computer to your HD display to show your pictures.
