Hello,
I got one of those smarthome plugs on Prime sales. The model is TP-Link Smarthome Mini HS-105.
I will probably try some time today if it will work on my Hopper 3 an Alexa.With my Alexa, everything else seems to work great.
Has anyone tried this on your Hopper 3?
I am assuming the Hopper always needs power so I thinking it might not work.
Anyway, just thought I would try it out. It does work great with my living room light.

Don't even bother to try it out. You will be just being doing the same thing as a power plug reboot every time it fires. Why would you want to do that? You don't.

KAB, yep, you are right. The Hopper 3 will turn on an off but have to recycle the Hopper every time. You do know I was forced to try this by my wife! Anyway, I think it would work on a normal TV.

Depends on what TV is a normal TV. Some smart TV's, like my Samsungs, will loose identity settings for Netflix, et al each time it loses power. Sophisticated electronics should not be used with these plugs. Stick to coffee pots and the like.

My Samsung TV has a setting to remember or not remember after losing then regaining power. My LG TV comes on when plugged back in as long as I have a turn off setting set. A smart plug works with them. It's my coffee maker that after being unplugged stays off when it gains power! I made a wrong assumption about our window air conditioner it is electronic but I found it too remembers how you had it set when power is regained and a smart plug can work with it. Something that needs to be on all the time probably isn't a candidate to use a smart plug.

They are great for when you are away or want to turn on lights at a certain time etc. I can leave my air conditioner off for longer periods of time and cool down the house a little before we get home etc...

Get a Nest thermostat. It will know when you are home and away and adjust itself accordingly. You can also turn it on and off from an App.

I have a lot of these smart plugs at my home for different purposes. I use two of them to control the power to my two Wally's, for power-saving purpose. A Wally with EHD and OTA tuner connected will consume roughly 30 watts. So I set up an automatic schedule in the smart plug to turn off the Wally's when there won't be anybody watching TV in the house. I don't know how much power a Hopper3 would consume but I know a Directv HR44 would be around 50 watts. FYI putting those receivers into standby doesn't save you any power so you have to turn them off.

If you kill the power to the H3, no scheduled recordings will take place.

Constant cycling of power on/off could also lead to premature failure of the H3 since it is not designed to be used that way.

For me I don't record anything 1am - 4pm Monday to Friday so that's when I turn off the DVR-enabled receiver and all its clients. I had been doing this while I was with Directv for the past 2 years or so before I switched to Dish recently. Will see how this plays out with Dish.
