Transponders etc ?

I have D* with a Sony SATHD300 STB & Toshiba 51HX83. Sorry if this question has been asked before. Is there an area/thread/link here that I can check D* info out: what are transponders, what SATs do they have up there, etc, so i maybe understand better the posts here. Thanks & again sorry if this has been covered & covered........
