TRON: Ares — Coming in October 2025

I never saw the original, let alone anything following.
Back in the Day, we asked the Boss if the programming department could take the afternoon off to see the original. He said yes. He would have come, but his Boss wasn't as cool as ours…

Been a long time, IIRC the original was the player, Jeff Bridges, getting sucked into the video game. Looks like this time the game breaks out into the real world?

You're in luck, since the only person from the original in this is Jeff Bridges, who isn't even the title character (Tron) -- who isn't present in this movie.

It's a little off-putting that this isn't a continuation in any form of the excellent Tron: Legacy. I'll be there day one to check it out, I hope it ends up being good but my expectations are a bit lower than they should be for a movie like this sadly.

But yeah, this one appears to be a story about the transition between worlds, and a destructive program named Ares (Jared Leto).

Ares would actually be the name I use all over (instead of meStevo) if I didn't feel compelled to change it when he became a popular character on Xena. A random page on my website I'd made in the 90s about the mythology of Ares blew up as a result though, was kinda funny. Got some ad revenue out of it.

Considering CLU (Bridges) was trying to accomplish what appears to be happening in this movie, one wonders where Sam and Quora are IRL. TRON (Bruce Boxleitner) should have remained behind to rebuild the Grid, unless Tesler (😉) from "TRON: Uprising" was actively keeping CLU's plans running.

I guess we'll find out in six months.

The original "TRON" movie was groundbreaking for its use of Computer Graphics in a full-length motion picture. As a programmer who had worked with BYU's MOVIE software in the 1970s, I have been following CGI from the early days.

Even though the programs I was working on at the time "TRON" came out in 1982 were in the realm of data manipulation, the final output was created by a CRT vector drawing characters one at a time, advancing the photosensitive paper back and forth to create pages of text. A form of "Computer Graphics"…

Nice looking poster.

It's going to look good, and sound good, I just hope the rest is, too.

I wonder, are there any movies that are named after a character that means so little to the actual movie (to the point that Tron isn't even in this Tron movie? lol)

You pioneers can let me know if it's any good.

BTW, are there any 3D theaters anymore?

Superman was in 3D at the theater we viewed it at, I went for the standard presentation showing, less expensive that way.

We might see Fantastic Four at the IMAX, watched F1 there, incredible looking.

Gee, I wonder if this implies something bad for this movie. Here's the available seats for today's 3pm show:
The later shows today are pretty much as vacant. But, since I went to Opening Day for TRON and TRON: Legacy, I guess I'll run over and see this one, too.
What did everyone think? I watched the 3D screening, Senior rate using a gift card I've been sitting on for a while (it had the Grinch on it). I thought the movie was fairly well done in filling in the historical details from the previous two movies and introducing the new generation of characters. I was a little worried that I might not enjoy the soundtrack, but it rocked. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

They introduced a Plot Complication in this movie which seems totally weird given that it spoils the second movie. And if you've seen the Trailers, it isn't a Spoiler that Jerad Leto looks like, well, pretty much every other character Jared Leto portrays, just in a TRON suit. It seems odd that he is the result of an iterative process to create the most advanced AI warrior, and the result is long, flowing hair and full facial hair. How's it supposed to fit inside a helmet?

But, like I said, I enjoyed myself. I had to share the theater with two other patrons, and we picked the seats all toward the center of the fourth row. The Fandango App did show later screenings had more pre-sold tickets, but I'm sure it's not on a lot of people's radars.
