Turning on subtitles/cc with one button?

Thanks John!

Yeah, if they create a code, all we would have to do is 'borrow' the new remote to get our harmony to learn it. ..or they could modify the firmware/update the dvr and add this right? Perhaps the "*" button could double as cc.

The CEO office called me at my office after I left for the day and left a message saying that he wanted to speak with me. I had written them an email with a few suggestions including a CC swap button on future remotes. That would most likely give us the ability to learn the code on our Harmony. I dont see anyway that the current remotes could be changed but I did suggest that if they added it to new remotes then they could possibly offer it to those of us who need it at a reasonable price. I guess they could give us the code also for our harmony remotes

I will let you all know how the conversation goes tomorrow when I return the call

WOW

Let us know how that goes!

ADA and the telecommunications ACTs

I am sure that a case can be made under either or both. Closed captioning originated from the telecommunications act I believe but the requirement for equal access to content i.e. actual programming that has closed captioning is derived from the ADA. At least that's the way I remember it from my advocacy re both Acts.

I dont see anyway that the current remotes could be changed but....
Simple, just use one of the buttons that currently has no function in "normal" TV viewing such as the page up/down. If you're already in the middle of something where those buttons are functional (guide display for example) it is not likely that you're wanting to toggle captioning at that time.

by the way, this was already suggested at post 3

Exactly!! This is what the DTVPal remote does. It would seem that a relatively simple software change would accomplish it, with no new hardware remote needed.

I will bring that up when I speak to him. He must work the late shift because he is not in yet.

Any other requests regarding CC?

Not from me. I think a toggle would be all we need. We can always use the menus to go in and change the features on the CC itself.

OH..maybe ask if he would modify the 'cancel' button to get you out of PIP without having to cycle through all the permutations. ;-)

Please do. This is something they should have done long time ago.

They could easily remap the remotes with a software upgrade.

I wish that they could figure out some way to let you know what stuff had CC without going to the program itself and going through all of this mess to switch it on or off. Maybe a little 'cc' logo in the program information bar (or whatever you call that popup that has the program info).

Yes I did. He was very helpful and fully understood our concerns. I emailed him a link to this thread and he read it and said that he would submit the ideas and concerns to engineering for at least future remotes. Obviously he can't guarantee that anything will be done but he said that he uses the CC also and can relate to our concerns.

Please Don't flood the thread with duplicate or rants. If we want this done it is best to keep it simple and direct.

Thanks for pushing this request on to Dish, but your comment above seems to miss the point that several of us have suggested in this thread - namely, that a single button feature could be easily enabled in software for use for with CURRENT remotes using the page down button. No hardware change would be required! See the attached pic where this exact thing is done with the DTVPal remote (which is very similar to Dish IRD remotes).

I didn't miss it at all. Read my post, he read the thread and noted everything each one of you suggested. I don't think there is a much better way to present your concerns to Dish. If you think that I missed something then you know the email.

I think its definitely a software change as well. Their current access consists of navigating through the menus so I'd wager they have to write a new 'one-step' routine for cc toggle. Probably not as easy as it sounds.

would be nice and save me TCs because CSR is not capable of walking someone thru the menus to turn it on over the phone and instead tells customer it is a TV manufacturer issues and creates a TC on me for it to go out and do just that

Software is never as easy as we might assume! Even if the coding for this might be simple, there's lots of testing, debugging, and searching for unintended consequences. And even if they implemented this, imagine how many ignorant people might accidentally press the Pg Dn button, see CC for the first time, and call cust service complaining about "newfangled words at the bottom blocking the teevee pi'cher..." Don't laugh ;)

They could maybe put the option to use the "page down" button to turn CC on/off on the same menu where you turn it on/off now.
That way the button wouldn't do anything until the user activated it.
