I gave someone $20 for their VS 2000 Platinum as they were desperate for cash. Is it any good or just an ornament. Is there any point in acquiring a dish and 'playing' around with FTA?

According to Lyngsat; AMC 15/18 at 105.0°W and possibly Galaxy 19 at 97.0°W and/or SES 1 at 101.0°W would appear to cover most of my interests.

Any chance of 'tuning in' to any/all of these birds with the platinum and a suitable dish & linear LNB?

Any idea on size of dish needed to even acquire any of these birds?

I am reasonably familiar with FTA in Europe (ASTRA 1&2 stuff) and have a Pace Rapier box and 1.3 meter (4'3") dish in Spain, which I installed and set-up there for reception of British FTA channels.

At the moment, I am living in an RV in Central coast, CA at 34.575631, -119.959931 and DON'T have a permanent internet connection (use Verizon smart phone with Android app. for email, forums etc).

I would be grateful for any help or advice on whether to sling the VS onto craigslist (or in dumpster), or how to make it pay for it's keep without spending a fortune.

Thanks!

Welcome to SatelliteGuys!

The VS is fully capable of receiving channel from the satellites that you mentioned. Just add a 90cm dish and LNBF and you're in business!

Check out the eBay special in the signature.....

If you can get a dish, and there's nothing wrong with the receiver it should be fine to do the channels you mentioned. You wouldn't need a 1.3m dish, some of us are using 30" dishes with no problems on those satellites. Not sure what you see on AMC15, other than wildfeeds, there's nothing on there fulltime except the MACY's store channel, some music channels for the stores. If you can find a small ku dish with feedhorn you should be ready to try it out. Plus an RV-mount or a tripod to set it on.
edit: Brian you must've been typing at the same time, hehe. Sell him a dish since he's in your territory!

The manual for it is listed in the FTA Manuals section of this forum. Using the Menu Structure you can see how to Delete, Rename, or Add satellites to the receiver.

Thanks for that guys (I had already found your very attractive deals on eBay Brian).

So the receiver?

Is there anything I can check before buying the dish/LNBF etc.?, some sort of self test function?, or engineer's/installer menu with test options?

I downloaded the .pdf manual, but of course, if secret menus exist, they are, according to the manual just that, secret!

The guy said it was working fine ' the last time he used it!?!!?'

Obviously, as good as the SatAV deal on dish combos, I would prefer not 'splash out' only to find the receiver is shot.

Dave

Other than connecting to a TV and pressing the Menu button to display the OSD, not much else could be determined without connecting to a satellite dish aimed at an active satellite with unencrypted MPEG2 TV channels. :(
