VIP 622 audio connection

Hi,
Does anyone use the optical audio port from the VIP622? I am just wondering if there would by any improvement in sound using this port in combo with the HDMI or if there would be no difference with using only the HDMI.

I run HDMI to my HDTV, and optical to my receiver. I only listen via the receiver. Works fine.

Running optical to the receiver gets you 5.1. HDMI would only get you two channel sound, due to limitations Dish set in the ViP622.

I use my optical to my HT receiver - works good. HDMI to TV also.

Yep, agreed. Since HDMI only gives you 2.0 (two channels) at this time, if you have a surround sound receiver you should be using optical.

Yeah if you want 5.1 digital audio or better you need to use the optical, or toslink cable

Just reported on Tech Chat the next update to 622 (by March 1) will have dolby digital 5.1 through HDMI.
