VIP 722 and VIP 321 combo driving me insane

I have a VIP 722 set to single mode. It has two cable drops running into it. Downstairs I have a VIP 381 with it's own cable drop. If I unplug the 722, I lose the signal to the VIP 381 downstair. This makes no sense as the 722 is set to single mode. Is there something I am missing? Is there a way to make the VIP 381 not take it's signal from the 722? I feel like an idiot but this is driving me insane.

What channel or input is the downstairs tv set to?

Your 722 may be powering the switch. Disconnecting it would cause all receivers to lose their channels.

There should be a power inserter that powers the switch so this should be the case

Not always true, Vip receivers can power the switch without the inserter.

And why are you unplugging the 722?

Two lines into the 722 sounds like a DP34 switch removing power would kill the outputs of the switch and it dosen't use a separate power inserter.

381 is a refurbished HD receiver that only works in SD. It was an 811 receiver that was refurbished. It will not have a coax cable output.

Refurbed 811, does not have HD anymore except for OTA.
