You may not be thinking of the right thing. It's the standby mode screen, which every ViP receiver displays when "off".
ViP receiver screensaver nothing but Hopper advertisements now

... if you do not like seeing the advertisements that usually show up in the Hopper screensaver.
It not that (for me). If the receiver would just switch off the HDMI output, then the TV would turn itself off.
I suspect Dish implemented this to reduce calls for tech support because the person didn't have their receiver turned on.

I'm sure they did. But it wreaks havoc on my TVs with automatic switches. This goes for everything that has no real off (Roku devices, FireTV sticks, etc. etc.). Then, whenever my wife has issues, goes who gets to fix it?
Oh that's on there when off, but I never thought of that being a screen saver as it does not rotate.

Indeed. I particularly hate the messages telling me to stop using my TV and stream something to my PC instead. Why why why?
Oh, I agree. I have the standard-def output from my Wally hooked up to a modulator to be able to watch it in another room. This works fine, except I have to unplug the modulator every time I want to switch to the other device hooked up through its coaxial input, because of the Wally screensaver keeping its composite input active.
At one point, when I was still using the old (silver-colored) ViP211, the screensaver would only come on once per day, after the nightly reset, and then the rest of the time turning the receiver off would not output the screensaver on the coaxial output. This is because the ViP211 has a pass-through for the OTA antenna input, so it can send the antenna signal through to the TV. Don't even get me started about the Wally's lack of a coaxial output, or a built-in OTA tuner for that matter!
I loved my VIP receivers. But, I watched two 722s just breakdown. Then, I watched my 722k just breakdown. The only VIP receiver that I had that worked from start to end was my VIP 211k. I've had my Hopper 1 for 6+ years and no issue. That's longer than my VIP 722s combined, and only a year shorter when I add in the time with the 722k. I still have my OTA insert for my VIP 722k. It has been sitting in my nightstand draw since early December of 2012.
Also, just for a fun anecdote, when my 722k broke and I switched to the Hopper, everything was expedited and coordinated by DIRT. I'll never say a bad thing about DIRT. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
Therefore, combine that with Dish focusing on the Hopper, and I can see why they are pushing for people to upgrade to the Hopper.

Yes, the ViP211 series does seem to fare pretty well. I had two of the original (silver-colored) ViP211's die. One of them lasted for more than ten years before it died, and the other one was already starting to die when I got it. I acquired that one just as a fun project, to see if I could resurrect it, and it continued to work for awhile. The ViP211k's have been rock solid. I still have three of them, and they all still work as far as I know, even though they are now all just taking up space in my closet.
The funny thing about this is that these messages are only appearing on a non-DVR two-room solution receiver (ViP222k) and Dish is trying to get people to upgrade all the way to a regular Hopper, which would mean a significant increase to the subscriber's bill. You would think that they would at least mention the Wally, or promote the Hopper Duo, as the Duo is a slightly cheaper alternative to a Hopper that still serves two rooms by adding a Joey. On the other hand, I did have one Hopper Duo die pretty much right out of the gate, shortly after they were first released, so maybe Dish has a reason not to promote that model. Meanwhile, all three of my Wally receivers have been rock solid. I suppose when people call the phone number in the messages to upgrade, the representatives are very knowledgeable, and will make sure to cover all of the available upgrade options.

Today I started receiving the Hopper upgrade notes on my VIP211k. The tips are just 4 different things about upgrading to the Hopper. Having 500 hours of HD recroding, voice search remote, 80,000+ on demand movies and shows, and then a general upgrade. It changed since this morning. This morning my tip was about how to use favorite lists. (I have been checking each time I turned on my TV since this thread was brought up)

I am getting the same message. At this point my 211k is working fine. Besides getting another receiver (Hopper), I would then have to get the OTA module and a new HDD. Not at this time.
So, what's the problem?
Doesn't Dish have the right to use whatever it likes on it's screensaver, it's THEIR screen saver after all not mine, not anyone elses?
It seems to me it's perfectly legitimate way to inform subs with old receivers that there are options out there.
The screen saver is only on my TV screen for 1/2 second before I press select or the SAT button to wake the receiver.
I don't really even know what it says, I don't read it, perhaps I will sometime.

There is an ado if it's the first sign of ViP obsolescence, which will be coming down the pike eventually. So yeah, we're allowed to discuss it.
