Virgin America said Friday that EchoStar Communications Corp. will provide the airline's primary in-flight entertainment.

The airline, based in Burlingame, said it aims to start domestic service in the United States in the spring. The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a tentative denial of Virgin America's operating license amid concerns that foreigners would wield too much influence over the airline's operations. The airline has until Jan. 16 to file a response to DOT's tentative denial of its license to operate.

Virgin America is the brainchild of Richard Branson, the British billionaire whose corporate holdings include Virgin Atlantic Airways. Branson hired the leadership for Virgin America and remains a financial backer.

The agreement with Englewood, Colo.-based EchoStar (NASDAQ: DISH - News) will put programming carried on EchoStar's satellite TV Dish Network onboard Virgin America flights.

I doubt Virgin will be allowed to fly in the U.S. due to the ownership concerns.
