[VOOM] Have you tweaked your cat lately or...

your HDTV system? With a friend of ours coming out tomorrow afternoon
with the latest ISF equipment to calibrate our SimSeleco porjector for
its final calibration I thought it time to ask the members if they
have had their systems calibrated. He was out last fall with older
equipment but even with that the PQ was improved dramatically. We
hadn't paid that much attention "before VOOM" but after having the
projector on for hours and hours, well you get the picture.

If you have paid more than $1,000 for your HDTV or projector and
haven't spent the $300-400 to have a calibration done then you have
been wasting your money as the vast majority (all?) of TVs and
projectors are not set for the best PQ. When done the colors are much
truer, hot spotting is eliminated, etc. and our DLP projector takes
less tweaking than CRTs.

Don't hesitate. You will be amazed!

Still watching HDTV (OK, OK if the truth be known-listening to music)
under increasingly cloudy ("sprinkles" anyone?) Seattle skies, Gill

P.S.: For you animal lovers out there about the only "tweaking"
Besstrashyni, out cat, gets is a daily or more massage.

How do I go about finding a Calibrator in my area that isn't a scam artist? Thats alot of money to have the picture tuned in and then find out the guy didn't know what he was doing to begin with.

OK Gill, I'll bite. Can you do it yourself with a calibration CD?

[VOOM] Re: Have you tweaked your cat lately or...

First let me reply to the previous post. I happen to know someone
who I trust to do the job. There is a listing of ISF certified
persons in most of the video mags but beyond that you are on your
own. You might try someone recommended by a friend or a video/stereo
shop in your area. Good luck.

Hey, Bruce guy, I really don't know if it can be done with a
calibration DVD although there are many postings on the web as well
as countless articles in the mags. All I know is my friend, Mike,
took several hours the first time around in part because the
particular code he had for our projector was not up to date.
However, it took a great deal of time to get the light level the same
from the blue to the red end of the spectrum and this was done by
using a video camera to read right off of the screen. Don't know how
much this helps. Will let you all know tomorrow evening what it
looks like with the latest calibration. Might be hard to find the
message among all those about the fate of VOOM though!

However, currently still enjoying VOOM--just finished watching
Deadwood on HBO!--under cloudy Seattle skies, Gill

Thanks. Tonight will be interesting! And I look forward to your
observations on the calibration. I met a guy in Rocester, NY who does this
too.

Re: [VOOM] Re: Have you tweaked your cat lately or...

I read the article in todays newsday about Voom as it
got the front cover of the paper. I see on Cnbc that
there is a lunchtime meeting of the board in florida
that will decide if they will give charley another
time period to come up with financing for the sat
operation. Mr johnson from the jets said he would buy
Madison Square Garden but the family said not a chance
of that happening. This is a real soap and it will go
on till the family sells the assets to real
corporation and not what they have now

[VOOM] Re: Have you tweaked your cat lately or...

Hey, "thegrod",

And the conclusion is Wow! Colors which were a strength of the
Sim2Seleco before are more so now with the reds appearing "right".
Shadow detail on LOTR is much improved. Skin tones are natural. Hot
spotting on foreheads has disappeared. Detail in the snow scenes of
the LOTR is much better. Haven't taken the time yet to check clouds
and snow in bright sunshine--before it was washed out.

That's it so far. Will post further thoughts in a few days. Better
post some of this on satguys In Your Area forum. If someone asks I'll
tell them who the tech was who did our projector. He took about 2 1/2
hours and said that it varies from 2-3 typically. Charges $250 but
that is a relatively small amount for something that is watched hours
every evening and on a 96" screen with an elaborate surround system.

Still enjoying HDTV even through the artifacts on Starz LOTR under
mostly clear Seattle skies, Gill

[VOOM] Re: Have you tweaked your cat lately or...an update for "thegrod"

A few more days of watching the tweaked projector and we've found the
good and the bad. The "bad" is that now more than ever we can see the
difference in the source material-bad source = bad PQ which takes in
the whole gamet from "skeeter" noise to color balance and saturation.
Those of you with high resolution stereo systems know exactly what
I'm talking about!

And the "good" is what happened last night. Got home from a meeting
of the Pacific Northwest Audio Society about 11 and my partner had
VOOM on, of course. He switched over to Discovery HD where they were
showing "The Life and Times of a Preying Mantis" or somesuch. I
stood there transfixed. It is the best PQ we've seen outside maybe
that of the Sony Qualia in a special Sony demo last year. VOOM must
be doing something right. The colors were spot on. It was so 3D like
that we were afraid that the larger the life mantis might eat us on
the spot! (And this is on a 96" screen).

Truly amazing. It was one of those "I'll never forget" experiences.
I've had a few but only a few when listening to reproduced music as well.

That's it for now, "thegrod", but we'll keep you updated should we see
anything more of note.

So, "tweak your cat" and enjoy the HDTV you own and love!

Still enjoying HDTV under partly cloudy Seattle skies, Gill
