[VOOM] Keep VOOM alive and well plan

I gotta say I like the new promo alot.
$1 install plus $5/month per receiver with a 6 month committment is
a great idea and better aligns VOOM better with the competition.

But the competition has many vital componets that VOOM can't
possibly supply, like regional sports channels and the larger "see
the all" sports packages, and LOCALS for rural America and America
where OTA HDTV is still in it's growth phase.

I really and truly want to eventually have VOOM but just can't
afford it now or in the immediate future. But I do feel that there
is a way for VOOM to enter my home and many other homes to gain a
strong market penetration...

VOOM MUST ALLOW viewers to pay for and receive only the HDTV premium
channels if they want that! This opens up the possibilty of VOOM
entering homes as an ancillary service with either cable TV, DirecTV
or Echostar.

Need I explain the logic of this?

I believe this approach can increase subscriber growth for VOOM as
well as the possility of later expansion to VOOM's cable type
channels once committment agreements are fullfilled with other
providers...but minimally the PREMIUM subscibers will continue to be
PREIUMIUM subscribers well into the future.

They could grow in huge numbers if they would put the STB's in Circuit City, Best Buy or even WalMart and let people pick it up take it home and install it. If it was in the store at least people could know about it.

Couldn't agree more!
When I got my VOOM system I stumbled into the Sears deal by accident
It wasn't anything VOOM or Sears did to make me aware of the product.

The other part you touched on is the install, at this point I think
most voomers are probably as technically astute as most the
installers the subcontractors use.

D* and Dish have contracts with those stores that keep V* locked out. I screamed this exact thing over a year ago and watched them get locked out. Compusa too i think. I truly believe that if Voom fails it will be directly related to NOT being in circuit city and best buy. Kmart will be the next outlet to lock them out, wouldnt that be funny? Since Sears bought it? Youd expect Voom to be in there at least.

Actually that would be Sears buying Kmart and since Sears has Voom you may
see it bleed over to the Big K.

I saw a flyer last night at the Dell kiosk at the mall where they have some
marketing deal going on with Voom. Didn't look real formal, more like a URL
for a Dell pitch on the Voom website, but at least it's a step. A formal
distribution deal with Dell would bee a major marketing step forward, IMO.
I'd take a Dell deal over Kmart any day as Dell is known for their marketing
and it could get some mileage.

Sorry, but I've already visited Best Buy this holiday season and I cringe
when I overhear some of the sales pitches from these high school/college
kids. Ask them if that's the current model of a Samsung DLP on the floor and
it's lots of "Um, Um, Um, I think so" when I'm already pretty certain it's
not. Without reasonably trained sales people pitching the product, it won't
go far in any brick and mortar.

[VOOM] Re: Keep VOOM alive and well plan

Funny. I made essentially the same point on the cablevision_digital
Yahoo group and on satelliteguys earlier this week (great minds think
alike :) ).

In particular, I now have D* and Cablevision and am generally unhappy
with D*'s HD offerings but like the fact I get locals (HD/SD) on
Cablevision. If CV made it easier for me to simply replace D* with
Voom (meaning a reduced rate) I'd jump in a minute and likely keep
both. As it is now I'm going to have to choose one or the other.

As for self-installation, I guess it could be important but I would
need someone to replace my D* dish with a Voom one so it doesn't
apply to me.

IAC, considering the services as COMPLEMENTARY rather than
COMPETITIVE could make a world of difference, especially when you're
looking to establish a presence in the market.
