[VOOM] Question about OTA and VOOM

Altho we are less than 15 miles as the proverbial crow flies from
Sutro tower in SF - there is a small hill between our roof and the
tower that would require a 40' tower on our roof to see the tower.
There are tall hills behind us. Maybe we could pick up digital
OTA by getting the signals that bounce off the hills. All I know is
that regular OTA TV comes in w. lots of multipathing w. the 30 y.o.
antenna we put in the attic a couple years before cable came in.
Question - is there a way to determine whether we can get HD OTA
before committing to VOOM? I wouldn't want to decide on VOOM w. the
idea we could get OTA and then discover at install time we can not.
What is VOOM's policy on this?
It is strange that D* never seems to have pushed tying an antenna
to their HD system the way VOOM has. Their business plan is to
deliver HD to virtually everyone via sat. What a waste of bandwidth,
just as providing LILs was for both providers.

[VOOM] Re: Question about OTA and VOOM

Hi Mike,

You can find out if you can get your OTA digital (and analog for that
matter although the VOOM STB doesn't decode analog) by going to
<antennaweb.org>. It will tell you what you are likely to be able to
get and how hard it is to pick up specific stations.

As to why other satellite services such as D* haven't pushed OTA
antennas all it takes is reading posts on here and satguys to see how
much trouble VOOM has had in bringing OTA to its customers. Most
people with TV service (sat or cable) didn't grow up with analog
antennas like I did as a kid. Getting a signal took a big antenna
pointed in just the right direction from Olympia to Seattle to get a
few stations. However, the best HDTV picture quality we get is off of
OTA althogh the Equator program we saw off of the VOOM sat a couple of
days ago came very close.

Good luck down there, Mike! SF is my favorite west coast city.
Unfortunatley, we can't afford to retire there so enjoy it for us.

Still watching HDTV (well actually listening to Duke Ellington's
Sacred Music Concert at the moment) under lightly raining Seattle
skies, Gill

I am familiar w. that site. It is too generic. If we were a
block down our street we would have no problem because the hill would
no longer be in our way. We could use some rabbit ears<G>. The
situation varies considerably from house to house. Eg. Our home
rises 4! stories above street level (on a steep upslope lot). So our
roof is at least 20 feet higher than the one next door which is only
2 stories above street level.
Housing prices here ARE rediculous. We have been in our home for
30+ years - so bought it when one didn't have to be a wealthy dot
commer to buy a home. Houses in the worst part of the Okld. ghetto
are now close to $300,000!!

Voom's add your own OTA is nothing less than fantastic

Howdy,

I live in SF Bay Area -- East Bay Hills, and for me Voom add your own (ota) antenna is nothing less than fantastic

I have a Weingard Digital (directional) OTA with a Channel Master digital remote control I get Kron Digital TV 4.1 and Kron's digital 4.2 HD Net for free

All of Kqed PBS Ch 9 => 91. 9.2 9.3 ect :yes

San Bruno Tower stations :)

San Jose KNBC Digital 11 and KNBC HD ch 11 :D

all with a 99% reception signal even in the worst of SF Bay area Rain storms.
which is especially nice when Voom's Sat signal goes below 60% and rain fade cancils out all of Voom Sat reception I still get my direct OTA digital and HD transissions perfect

If you get digital & HD OTA signals like me... you kind of love Voom's ala carte add your own ota concept :clap

Voomster :rainbow

I would call Voom and ask for an antenna upgrade to either the Wineguard, like the above post described, or a Channelmaster 4228. Accroding the the above post you need a directional antenna for your area. I am thinking you didn't get one, so call voom complain and request either of the antennas I suggested. I got upgraded to a Channelmaster 4228 here in VA.

[VOOM] OTA Antenna question

I just got done talking to my installer. He says the antenna provided by
Voom is a digital one, not a high def one. He swears I will get a digital
signal, but I will not get a high def local signal without a $150 high def
antenna. Is this right?
