[VOOM] Receiver unauthorized/OTA channels?

It appears that reading from this forum that the receiver continually
needs to be authorized (every two weeks?) in order for the unit to
function. Can anyone who unplugged the sat before cancelling confirm
whether or not the OTA functions past two weeks? If not, is there a
way to Reauthorized the receiver to just get OTA channels (any work
around enabling the IPG tier...don't need the voom's in programming
guide to get OTA?).
thanks,
hanh

Confirmed. 4 months of OTA without voom supscription. Must have 6.0 software and above to scan for locals. Must have a access card even if there is no account for it.

I thought this was illegal. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought there
was some FCC mandate that any gear capable of receiving OTA HD signals
had to be able to operate without a subscription. I thought this was
why DirecTV and Dish sell their HD units at full cost with no
subsidies to their dealers, since they can never guarantee that an
enduser will actually activate DirecTV/Dish services.
