[VOOM] Voom survey. Voom plans.

I participated in the Voom customer survey a couple of days ago.
Based on the questions, it seems to me that someone at Voom is
convinced that they will do it big based on their "exclusive"
channels and more channels on a new satellite. I think not. Later
perhaps, but not now.
Ask anyone at DirecTv about customer retention. Number one answer is
DVR. I still have both Voom and DirecTv HD package. I recently got
the HD Tivo for DirecTv. I now watch the DVR (and therefore DirecTv)
almost exclusively. Why? Even though the combo of DirecTv HD
channels and local HD channels are less than a third of what I can
get on Voom, I can record exactly what I want to see, and see it
exactly when I want to see it. My TV time is limited. Unlike many
I do not sit and watch TV hour after hour. With Voom, there has to
be something good on between the hours of 8:00pm and 11:00pm. (40
Voom HD channels X 3 hours = 120 hours of choice) With the DVR, I
can record from any of the channels across the full 24 hours in a
day. So with 8 Direct/Local HD channels, I get 192 hours of choice
every day (8 X 24 = 192). And, as a bonus, I can watch exactly when
I want.
So, if I were at Voom, I would suggest prioritizing the development
of a stable and usable DVR rather then more satellites. Perhaps
someone at Voom would recognize this, if the correct questions were
asked in the surveys.

I don't know the exact questions, but I have the feeling you jump too fast
to conclusions. The DVR is a top priority for VOOM. But they can't do more
than they already do, which is doing the development.

In addition to the DVR, they acquired much more bandwidth. This fact and the fact
to move to MPEG-4 (H.264 and/or WM9) will give them just much more options.
To me. it looks like they try to find out what the viewer market wants, or looking
for a confirmation of their thoughts and concepts.

[VOOM] Re: Voom survey. Voom plans.

Most of the survey questions resolved around the "exclusive"
channels. I recall ONE question regarding a DVR, and the question
was "How much would you be willing to pay for a DVR?". Since I
currrently also subscribe to DirecTv (because they have a DVR), and
DirecTv charges $5 per month (The $5 is waived if you subscribe to
the equivelent of VaVaVoom). I answered $5 (per month). That was
the only DVR question in a 45 minute survey...........

[VOOM] Re: Voom survey. Voom plans.

Revovled, not resolved.. Good grief.

Anyway, a DVR is a REQUIREMENT for me. I will not cancel DirecTv
until the alternative (such as Voom or Cable) has a DVR. I did try
the alternative (Voom in this case), without canceling DirecTv.
I like the selection on Voom. Still, with the HD-DVR, I watch
DirecTv almost exclusively.

Not to nitpick, but I think you're making some incorrect assumptions about
where the bulk of the development of STBs is done.

Having a little firsthand exposure to the early versions of the Moxi
bo:mad:from the Rearden Steel, then Digeo days), I sit here now wondering if
Paul Allen is just sitting on that technology in perhaps some sort of behind
the scenes bidding war. Pure speculation on this. BTW, Echostar was one of
the original VCs for that company if that tells you anything.

With Voom touting networked DVR, I'm thinking there are at least parts, if
not very significant chunks of Moxi technology within the soon to be
released boxes(do a Google search for Moxi Mate). It may even be a basic
re-branding. It should be noted that Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta have
been offered the same core technology, as have the cable interests like
Comcast. Personally I don't think it's a matter of working out the bugs as
much as it is someone being willing to cut that fat check to get their name
on the box. The early versions of the Moxi were done over 2-3 years ago.
Based on what I see in the design world on a daily basis, there is no reason
that thing shouldn't have already been on the market for 6 months to a year.
Doesn't take that long to sort hardware and software with the right
engineering effort.

Side note: the scrambling you see today for the $1k HD Tivo is both a
blessing and a curse, IMO. It shows the big boys that there is a market for
that type of box, but at the same time it shows that people are willing to
pay dearly for the technology. I guess the $200-$300 price point targets I
was hearing a couple of years ago have long since been buried. Maybe HD tech
needs to go through a couple of more years maturity or maybe we need one of
the big Japanese CE companies to step in to bring these things down to the
realm of more of the "Six pack Joes".

I stand corrected on this last portion. Just read an interview with Paul
Allen where he again mentions the $300 price point. Perhaps still a
generation or two out and requiring some additional chip integration, but at
least his thoughts are in that general direction.

Current Moxi box cost he puts at $500 for a reference point, so if you guys
are thinking $750 for the new DVR, then someone stands to profit once the
volume is there and development costs are recouped.

Re: [VOOM] Re: Voom survey. Voom plans.

Do you mean to tell us that not only did you have to buy the DirecTV DVR for about $1,000.00 but that they also charge you an additional $5.00 to use it? Why?

[VOOM] Re: Voom survey. Voom plans.

The $5 is waived since I subscribe to the "premiere" package
(VaVaVoom equivalent).

In order to actually enjoy a movie without stutters or STB lockups, I
suppose $5 more per month would be worth it somehow...
