[VOOM] WHY VOOM?

Having had DirecTV and HDTV programming for a few years I am about to
call it a bust and declare that High Definition programming in America is
dead. DirecTV offers very little in HD programming. The HD Discovery
Channel is comprised of the same re-runs over and over again. Their HD Net
Movies are usually pitiful examples of movie-making, with the same rre-runs
over and over again. The other HD channels seem to be nothing more than
sports or trash programming. Showtime HD is a joke, so I just cancelled it.
HBO fairly good if you can get around the sports and sex trash specials.
VOOM supposedly offers about 30 HD movie channels, even a horror movie
channel. But nobody seems to know much about VOOM and cannot answer
my questions. The Sears outlets near my home have and sell VOOM but, so
far, don't even know how to set it up and can't even receive it in their show
rooms.
I have called VOOM outlets several times and, so far, nobody can even
answer one single question of mine, such as: DOES VOOM BROADCAST
LETTERBOXED PROGRMMING, ESPECIALLY WITH MOVIES? I am a
letteerboxing aficionado. I love wide screen movies.
Huh?
Can anyone answer these questions?
How does VOOM work with TiVo -- or does it? I currently have a Hughes
DirecTV TiVo unit and know that you ordinarily can't record HD on a DVR, but
I am at my wit's end with the failure known as High Definition Programming.

Sears is probably the worst possible choice of outlets. 1-800-GET-VOOM will
get you some answers but prepared to not get good, accurate answers to any
technical questions. The CSR's are courteous but this is not their forte.
You have the ability in the systems setting page of a Voom receiver to set
letterbox, etc. However the source material may preclude that. I haven't
played with that too much since I got my system setup since I am satisfied
that I have filled as much of the screen as possible without stretching the
content.
I don't know what you mean by Showtime HD being a joke. PQ or content?
Anyway, IMHO HD is far from a failure, but as with any new technology, there
are wrinkles that need to be worked out. VOOM offers the most content, and
the system, once installed, works very well for most of us most of the time.
Recording HD has some technical and copyright issues that have not been
worked out yet.
You may be dissatisfied anyway with the HD content since you seem to be very
critical. Since the investment is minimal why not try it and draw your own
conclusion.

Disappointed, not critical!
I have thought of simply turning off my HD receiver and try it again in about
ten years -- when the rest of the country catches up.
I often check the VOOM programming shedules and it seems fine to me. It's
just that when I would call around and ask these questions, all I received was
a "Duh . . . "
Will I be disappointed with VOOM?
I don't watch local or network programming. B-o-r-i-n-g!
No more news shows.
Lots of movies! Movies! Movies! Movies!
How does a DVR differentiate between high def and standard def when you
are recording? The usual way? My high def receiver picks up channels my
standard def TiVo unit cannot. Of course, those channels are high def.
However, I currently need two receivers -- one for HD and one for standard
def. How will this work if I get VOOM?

Did you try voom.com ? or calling VOOM ?
Most of those are simple questions, we as a group could answer but it
would be better if you spoke to someone @ VOOM not Sears.

I recently went to VOOM after 8 years!!! with Dish, and I couldn't be
happier. Their HD channel lineup is great: where else can you see a
Amarcord in HD Yes, they are shown in widescreen (unless the
original is shot in 4x3). Give them a try, you should be happier than
with DirecTV (although VOOM doesn not have a HD DVR).

[VOOM] re: WHY VOOM?

VOOM does not broadcast all movies as they were
originally made. 2.35:1 and 1.33:1 movies do not get
broadcast in their native aspect ration; everything is
either downsized or upsized to 1.78:1. This is a
point of contention with many home theater and movie
buffs. I guess VOOM was more worried about having
complaints regarding letterbox bars on widescreen sets
than delivering the content as the director intended.

VOOM is a big proponent of showing movies in their original aspect
ratio, at least on their exclusive channels. I can't speak for HBO,
Cinemax, and the like though.

In the beginning VOOM was not showing things in OAR.
But has since changed it's position, although they cant or wont go
back and re transfer the HD stuff to OAR, all things going forward
will be transfer to HD perserving the OAR.

There is no dVR....yet. So I don't know how it will work. The closest clue
was posted by Robert earlier today and had a link to get to it. VOOM's
explanation of what's going on at CES this week.
