Just got the new box, and it is version 6.00. And it DOES get in
channel 54. However, I have NOT done an OTA scan. In fact, the
service person said not to do the OTA scan.

Any ideas how to get both Baltimore and Washington DC stations? I
have an antenna with rotor that does get all of them in on my Zenith
HDTV tuner.

Thanks,
-John

Since you have 6.00, don't do anything today. Tonight put the box in standby
and tomorrow morning make sure you're on 6.10. Then do the ota scan.

That's my recommendation anyway...

Some thoughts about OTA program guides:

How would Voom know what local channels you pick up by scanning?
Should they send everybody ever possible OTA channel info? Should
they somehow know every possible channel for ever possible location
in North America?

Perhaps once the phone line is required, the box could report what
local channels it was receiving and then Voom could send a
customized list.

In my case, the box does know which channels it is scanning, as it is nailing the correct
call letters from 4 different major cities.

Relative to downloading every possible channel... I would guess that since the Voom
database knows every zip code associated with every box, they could set the boxes to
download the detailed data for every channel within a 200 mile radius of that zip code.
The software could then show the guide data for only the channels that appear in the
guide. If there is enough storage space inside the box for channels withing 200 miles of
your antenna, this seems very plausible.

Sounds reasonable as they are already sending the "whole" lot.

Maybe the box could be modified to just "pick off" the channels it
wants.

Perhaps Wilt can give us the low-down on how this is supposed to
work. My impression was that the program data is/can be included
with the digital OTA signal, so as long as the STB and the local
station are compatible, AND the local station in fact includes the
program guide info with their signal, the STB should be able to
polulate the guide.

Since these local stations are free to do "whatever" they want with
their allocated bandwidth (19Mbit), they are the ones that decide
what will be broadcast on the various subchannels. I have one local
station that has chosen to broadcast 5 channels (1 main and 4 sub)
instead of HD.

Also, someone who has a standalone STB (no satellite) should also be
able to get the program guide data over the air for the digital
channels.

I hope you are right and wrong. I hope you are right related to the Voom box being able to
handle PSIP (the information stations can embed in the signal to provide on-screen guides
detailed programming info). I hope you are wrong in that the solution for newly scanned
channels that don't already show programming info will need to depend on PSIP for the
information.

Since Voom serves these other locations with detailed programming info in their guide,
they have the data in the system (in other words, they are not depending on PSIP data to
populate the guide). I've observed with 4 "local" markets that I can tap, a good number of
stations are not implementing or properly implementing the PSIP data in their signal
streams. I strongly hope that we don't have to wait on them to get their PSIP info right.
Instead, I hope that Voom finds a way to map detailed programming guide data based on
our locations and the channels our scans can actually lock. This would provide detailed
data ASAP, without having to wait (what will probably be a very long time) for each station
to get their own PSIP implementation done right.
