WD Portable Hard Drive not recognized by Dish 722

Purchased WD My Passport Portable HD - 500 GB - Both 3.0 and 2.0 compatible. Plugged it in to the front USB port and then tried the back port but error 850 comes up stating our device is not supported by Dish. Was told by Dish TA that it is probably because it is a portable HD and doesn't have it's own power source. This didn't make sense to us. Is the issue because it is not strictly 2.0 compatible? We are not able to view any DVR programs and a new receiver (not sure which model) is being shipped. Would like to save the programs before we switch to the new one. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

It is true. 99% of the self-powered USB drives do not work with the Dish DVRs because the DVR USB voltage and amperage will not support self-powered drives. You will need a powered USB hub to utilize your new hard drive.

@ DVR External Hard Drive - Expand DVR Storage | My DISH Support it plainly states: The external hard drive must have its own power supply.

Thanks for your quick reply RickDee. When we called to find out why our DVR wasn't working we were told of all the guidelines except for that one. Thanks for the link as well.
