Hey guys, a friend of mine used to have Dish a couple years ago, but cancelled his service for cable. He has since dropped cable and is only using a ROKU. I was telling him a few days ago what I knew about the Welcome Pack (which admittedly isn't much) and he was very interested. He still has his dish and receiver (I believe it's a 222k, although it may be a 322 (he didn't know for sure). What would he need to do to sign up for the Welcome Pack, or is he eligible to get it?

First thing is call up the list of programs and see if what he wants is included. If he wants to subscribe to the package contact DIRT. If all he wants is the local channels visit the OTA forum, free after the initial investment.

In his location no locals are available OTA. I showed him a list of channels, and he was very interested. I was just worried because I read somewhere that the Welcome Pack had been changed to "grandfathered customers" only, but other sources say that new or returning customers can sign up for it as well. He's not a member of this forum, so I don't know how to contact DIRT for him. Is there a number at Dish that he can call to sign up?

Anyone can get it. Have him contact a local retailer, if none in area just go through DISH but directly not some online site other than DISH.com. Also have him join here... :)

Any one can get the welcome pack once they are a subscriber but the minimum you can open an account with is the smart pack.

I think he will also enjoy having access to subscriber content on the Roku channels of Fox (if he has a Fox affiliate with Dish), Food Network, HGTV, etc.* With the Welcome Pack, this is my quicklist of channels:

HD Locals (where available)
73 Blue Highways Television/LAFF
82 FeTV/Cozi TV
102 Dish Studio HD
107 Comedy Central HD
110 Food Network HD
112 HGTV HD
117 Pop
120 History Channel HD
127 Oxygen [also in America's Top 200]
128 We TV HD
139 TBS HD
161 MTV 2
166 CMT HD
175 Boomerang [also in America's Top 200]
179 Discovery Family HD [also in America's Top 200]
183 TLC HD
185 Hallmark HD [also in America's Top 200]
203 Bloomberg Television HD [also in America's Top 250]
209 msnbc HD
214 The Weather Channel HD
223 NewsMax
259 INSP
260 TBN
261 EWTN
264 KTV
266 Angel Two
279 CCTV News
280 RT News
286 NASA
393 Pursuit (Hunting)
823 Baby First TV
9403 BYUTV
9406 Classic Arts Showcase
9410 Link
9415 Free Speech Television

I would also recommend the $10/month Dish Movie Pack (especially if he has an HD receiver like the 222) which contains the following:
130 HDNet Movies (HD) [SD feed also available despite the name]
187 Hallmark Movies & Mysteries HD [SD & HD]
247 Universal HD [HD only]
249 Crime & Investigation HD [HD only]
251 Centric HD [HD only]
254 Logo HD [HD only]
344 Encore Suspense [SD only]
356 Starz Kids & Family HD [SD & HD]
369 MTV Live HD (formerly Palladia) [HD only]
377 MoviePlex [SD only]
378 IndiePlex HD [HD only]
379 RetroPlex HD [HD only]
380 Epix HD [SD & HD]
381 Epix 2 HD [SD & HD]
382 Epix Hits HD [SD & HD]
384 FXM HD [SD & HD]
385 MGM HD [HD only]
388 PixL HD [SD & HD]
386 Sony Movie Channel HD [SD & HD]
394 World Fishing Network [SD only]

This would also give him access to the Roku channels of Encore, EPIX, and Starz. *Also, on the Dish Anywhere site, there is access to these channels and others.

He may even be able to get HBO at the special price of $10/month. This would also give him access to HBO GO on his Roku along with the following channels:
300 HBO (E) HD
301 HBO 2 (E) HD
302 HBO Signature HD
303 HBO (W) HD
304 HBO 2 (W)
305 HBO Family HD
307 HBO Comedy HD
308 HBO Zone HD (HD Only)
309 HBO Latino HD

He could even try Dish Movie Pack and HBO for a month just to see if he likes them. He may be able to chat and get Dish Movie Pack for 50% off; it does not hurt to try or ask. However, I do not know if one can readd the HBO Special Price for the $10/month special price more than once. Then, if he does not, I believe one can still drop them without additional fees for removal.

Does dropping to the 'Welcome Pack' also allow the external harddrive to remain live, so you don't lose your recordings?

Or maybe a better question is WHAT is the absolute minimum priced package that will allow your recordings to stay viable, at least until they can be off-loaded and/or watched?
