VMD stands for Versatile Multilayer Disc. A new disc format developed by New Medium Enterprises, a London-based company. VMD is an extension of standard red-laser DVD format. It basically adds more layers to DVD: four to ten layers per side, resulting in storage capacity more than sufficient for HD content: up to 50GB per side!

Because it is based on traditional DVD technology, VMD production requires only marginal modifications of the manufacturing equipment and of the DVD player design. This translates into lower costs for both players and media: close to those of standard DVDs. Several times lower than either HD DVD or Blu-ray.

The first VMD player (at $150) and the first 100 HD titles in VMD format are scheduled for US launch in Q3 of this year. (See PR's in the Meet the Third Contender in the Format War: VMD thread.)

Sure, it's not going to be easy for a small company to compete with industry titans, and it remains to be seen which major studios will support this format, but the price advantage is so dramatic, that it will be realy interesting to follow this new development in the Format War!
