One of the current driving forces of PS3 sales is people who want an inexpensive Blu-Ray player. They don't give a rip about games or might pick up one or two of the AAA titles.

Whatever the reason, it is good for the game industry by getting units into peoples hands. It's like no one at Sony talks with anyone else at Sony.

Sony slashes Blu-ray price in line with PS3

New model movie player to retail for US $599

Sony has stepped up its initiative to establish Blu-ray as the high definition home entertainment format, by announcing a new Blu-ray disc player which will retail for US $599.

The BDP-S300 will go on sale early this summer and is priced the same as the recently released PlayStation 3. The previous model BDP-S1 currently retails for US $999.

The BDP-S300 is around the size of a standard DVD player and has all the features of the US $999 model, with the added benefit of being able to play CDs.

Sony is heavily promoting the Blu-ray format, recently offering initial European PlayStation 3 consumers a free copy of the movie Casino Royale when the console goes on sale on March 23.

Although analysts say price reductions would benefit PS3 sales, Sony isn't likely to make any price cuts for at least another two years, said Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America. She noted a similar time frame for lowered prices for the PS2. "We probably expect the same for PS3," Otzman said, adding that while the console's price is higher than competitors', it comes completely packaged so consumers don't have to buy extra equipment or attachments."

I dont see a problem here-I am sorry I just dont, Sony benefits from both the PS3, and Blu ray......talk me through this, but I dont see the negatives here at all.

Sony, Blu-Ray, and A/V consumers benefit by the price drop.

The PS3 takes a hit from the high-end A/V consumers who will now buy the standalone player.

thats not fair to say, Ps3 is for games and BLu ray, not everyone wants a game system to play blu ray, instead of popping in a disk, and going through the Ps3 menu they want to just pop in a disk....also I dont think Sony was really planning on people buying the PS3 as just a BLu Ray movie player....I think this is a good move, it benefits both sony by really pushing Blu ray and taking away the price edge that HD DVD had, and the consumer by giving them a cheaper player, and for those that didnt want a game system for blu ray player they now have choices!

This will affect PS3 sales. How much? Who knows, but as I said, one of the current driving forces of PS3 sales is people who want an inexpensive Blu-Ray player.

Of the three people I know who own PS3s. Two bought them only for the Blu-Ray player and have zero interest in getting any games. If there was a $599 Blu-Ray player available when they bought their PS3, they would have bought the standalone player instead.

I understand what you are saying, but to me I would count PS3 sales as only those who bought the PS3 as game and Blu ray not just blu ray....plus the people who want a PS3 from here on out are going to be the ones buying it, all we are going to see is true demand for the PS3 from here on out (well after the europe Launch) From a article I just read Sony has shipped 4 million PS3's which is impressive, while stores do have them sitting on shelfs in my area, within a week they are bought, even the local gamestop guy admitted the last week the sales have been doing better.

One of the main reasons my wife got me a PS3 was for BluRay movies. I am simply not interested in playing games on my PS3 as there are no good games on the PS3 yet which I would like.

I played Madden Football last night for the PS3 and I kicked butt at the pro level winning my game 72 to 0. I was so bored by the 2nd quarter I couldn't wait for it to end.

I have some BlueRay movies on order from gamesnflicks and will give them a spin and see how they are, as I am undecided as of yet if I want to keep this thing.

I would take the PS3 back quick and wait a few months. I have a feeling they are in for a big price cut.

I like how the analyst says the PS3 is a complete package where the consumer doesn't have to buy any accessories.

My friend has a PS3 and just plunked down $50 for a second controller.

My Nintendo Wii came with a controller AND a game, and it's less than half the cost of a PS3. I know it doesn't play DVDs. I don't need a second DVD player.

Not trying to start a us vs them battle, but I'm just saying her comment is not quite accurate.

Count the days...... The HD DVD folks will be cutting the cost of the next model to $299..... Let's see fast they do this....

I just wish one format would win.

I'm not getting a next gen DVD player until there's only one format to get.

Check back in about a year......

Of course, by then we may all be downloading our HD over IP.....

I world never buy a stand alone bluray or hd dvd without it having a recordable feature.

It seem to foolish to have just a player. I own both bluray and a hd-dvd with my gaming console.

Why all the PS3 hate?
