Which Premium for HD Movies?

So I was thinking about adding a premium package to my service. I will use it 95% of the time just for watching movies in HD. I'll probably never watch the SD channels. Does anyone recommend any particular one? Which one looks the best? Who offers the newest and widest variety of movies?

Thanks a bunch.

I prefer HBO and always hve because of their original programming which is in HD also. Plus the non ppv HD boxing matches are great. StarzHD is a good one too.

If boxing and original programming do not matter much to you, Id take a look at CinemaxHD, StarzHD and HBOHD's current programming online and pick one from that.

I have StarzHD free for 3 months (new customer) and am finding almost nothing I want to watch, at least not on the HD channel (comes with 5-6 other SD variants)

If you insist on a premium channel for movies only, I would recommend Starz. They seem to carry the bigger blockbusters. Myself, I'm going to ditch HBO after Sopranos/Entourage is over and save the money and stick with Netflix. All satellite premium channels are just retreads of the stuff I've already rented from Netflix. I went and got a Blu-Ray player (PS3) and couldn't be happier with the HD movies I'm viewing.

I agree that Netflix and a Blu Ray is the best decision I ever made. That being said I still like Encore for when Im bored and HBO for originals and boxing

It's a personal choice...I went with Starz because we like their movies. Showtime was a close 2nd because of boxing. HBO was a no-go since we don't like any of their original series (The Sopranos, Rome, Bill "The Nutjob" Maher, etc.), and we really don't care for Cinemax.

Once you look at the package discounts, and the DVR fee waiver, frequently the best deal is to get the "America's Everything Pack" plus HD package. I watch movies from HBO, SHO, CIN, and STARZ HD. And I do like the Bill "Tells it like it Really Is" Maher show.

If one gets AT250 plus HD plus two premium movie channels, I think the bill is $53 plus $20 plus $22 plus the DVR fee ($5?). So that's what? $100/month?

AEP plus HD is $110. So you get the other two HD channels, plus their SD tiers, for another $10/month.

If you have two DVRs, the difference is only $5/month.

I'd watch more of the Encore movies if they were in HD. About 90% of my movie viewing is from the HD channels.

I currently have Showtime-HD and very little of the programming is HD. Tudors is HD, but recently filmed Penn&Teller episodes are not HD. Other movies that I tried were sometimes not in HD. I would not recommend that choice unless you were looking for something specifically on Showtime.

I'm going to subscribe to HBO-HD on Friday, because they will be starting "John from Cincinnati" on June 10th - the new TV show by David Milch (Deadwood, NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues - I thought Deadwood was easily the best show of the past 5 years). And, on Friday, HBO-HD will show all six Star Wars movies in HD (which won't be on HD disk for a number of years, evidently).

PS There are probably more HD movies on the "Dish HD" package than anywhere else. If you like Horror or Martial Arts or Art-House Films or International Films, there's no contest, as each of those genres has its own HD movie channel. And there's also HD-Net Movies, which shows more movies in HD than any of the Premium channels, although admittedly the titles are not as recent.

I would recomend HBO - definitely more mainsteam hit movies in HD, and I love their original programming, which is also in HD. Plus, if you like boxing, HBO usually has the upper hand at contacting for the better fights. For me though Deadwood, The Sopranos, Rome, Entourage, Big Love, The Wire (which hasn't been HD, but still one of the best shows around), and all the other original programming they keep putting out is what keeps me paying the monthly fee. I LOVE the HBO shows.

If you want more kid friendly movies, go with Starz. They must have a deal with Disney because they have show Pirates of the Carribean, Cars, and CHicken Little. I also have Starz and thinks it is pretty good.

If you like soft porn, go with Skinimax, urrr Cinemax. Actually, they have a lot of the same movies as HBO, just no sports and original series, plus plenty of adult entertainment at night. I think Time Warner owns both Cine and HBO. I don't sub to Cine but from the looks of the program guide it has a good variety of movies.

I did have Showtime for a while and I would have to give it a so-so rating. The movies are definitely sub par compared to Starz or HBO, and the original series haven't caught my interest. I tried to watch both Weeds and Jeffery(? is that the name) and they just didn't do much for me. I did like Penn and Teller though. For boxing they do do a good job, and most fights were HD. The movie selection was the killer for me. Seems like they had a lot of very average movies and B-movies. I would go through the entire week to set up recordings and find nothing worth using my hard drive space.

If I haven't tired you out yet, her is my suggestion. First, get HBO. bring up the list uf HD channels and get it so all 4 of the movie channels are on the list. Then scroll through a week of programming and take note of what movies and or shows you would watch or record from each channel. A one week survey should give you a good idea of what channel you should get.

Wow! Thanks for all the input... Now I'm thinking I just need to get a PS3 and Netflix subscription! Anyone want to email my wife that information for me?!??!?!?!

Netflix or Blockbuster Online are two good choices. If you get a PS3, then you may wish to try GameznFlix.com - I found the trial service to be pretty good...although they could use more BD movies.

Approximately 85% of their movies and bigger series (Tudors, Weeds, Big Love, etc) are true HD. You can check their on-line schedule to verify.
Except that all the programs that are not HD are marked "HD".
This is a constant problem.
It's one of these "technically true even though it is false" that is used by marketers every day.
Not only is Penn&Teller on Showtime marked "HD", even though it is 4x3 SD upconverted, but 24 on A&E-HD is marked "HD", and it is also 4x3 SD upconverted - even though it is 16x9 on all the DVDs for all seasons. So, if A&E went to Blockbuster and rented a DVD of "24", they could upconvert it and at least have the entire 16x9 image. Instead, they are using the 4x3 SD tapes Fox provided to SD affiliates to show "24" on their HD channel. And it is marked "HD". Technically it is "HD" because the signal provided to Dish is 1080i, even though the source material is 4x3 SD.

Yepp. Ill probably be picking up a HDDVD player late summer to go with my Samsung BR player cuz Im tired of waiting on Universal and the Toshibas are getting cheap.

In the schedule I looked at, P&T was not marked as HD.

Except for P&T, I rarely see a program on Showtime that is not HD. Their schedule shows a few more, and the occasional movie, but I rarely tune in and hit those.

Their on-line schedule differentiates between "TrueHD" and "Upconverted." Except for P&T, and the occasional comedy act, they rarely show an upconverted program during prime evening hours.

I find myself watching several of the SD Cinemax (and main HD Cinemax) channels and Encore channels more frequently than HBO, Showtime, TMC or the Starz pak. I do tend to watch stuff on the HD versions of those 4 services that E* is carrying in HD when there's something on them that I want to watch. I'm still sitting the HD DVD/BR fence...
