For websites that don't, or won't work in chrome maybe try User-Agent Switcher. I know it worked in the past for me.
Think I also used a user agent swircher in FF a while ago. But really haven't used chrome or FF in quite a while. Now, almost to exclusivity, chromium.
Have also emailed some webmasters and suggested alternative, W3C compliant, solutions for an I.E. exclusive website. Most have employed the suggestions.
HTML5 instead of active-x is a common suggestion.
