Members, I need a little help. I've been thinking about picking up a HDD to use with my 722k as an external HDD. I found this one listed in an AVS forum thread:
Newegg.com - HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000.C HDS721032CLA362 (0A39264) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive I know it's an internal drive but I was going to match it up with this item: http://www.newegg.com/Product
Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Should this work for me if I get the 722k external HDD activated?
Thanks,
Ghpr13:)

When I bought an external drive I was going to get a 500GB. However, the price difference between 500GB and 1TB was not very much.

I am sure glad that I got the 1TB because I have already used more than 500GB.

It should work, but you should think about getting a 500g or 1TB drive, as the prices have really come down, and you will use the space! ;)

yaz96 & will53033,
Thanks for the info and suggestions of going for a 1TB. I think you are both right and will look around for a 1TB HDD. Makes more sense.

i would go with an enclosure or a EHD out of the box drive. If you read the comments on that usb addabpetr it says that it can easily come lose from the connection, if the harddrive suddenly losses power it can make it useless and you will lose all your shows. If you read around on here this is because it is linux based software that the dvrs use, and if you don't have a linux computer it will be hard to recover the drive if this ever happens, it happened to my EHD when the power strip was accidentally turned off.

If you put all your eggs in one basket, you may be upset if it crashes. I'd recommend up to a 500GB drive, and another if you need more storage. Though the 1TB drives are cheaper and cheaper these days. Here's today's pricebreak from pricewatch on EHD's (just make sure you get a powered drive, not one that pulls power from the USB 5V source):

$469.62 - usb 4tb
$237.69 - usb 3tb
$158.95 - usb 2tb
$72.7 - usb 1tb
$119.95 - usb 1.5tb
$74.95 - usb 750gb
$69.95 - usb 640gb
$57.99 - usb 500gb
$66.95 - usb 400gb
$54.95 - usb 320gb
$55.95 - usb 300gb
$50.08 - usb 250gb
$149.99 - usb 200gb
$45 - usb 160gb
$41 - usb 120gb

I have all my EHD's connected to either SATA/USB or EID/USB adapters and I have never had one come accidentally disconnected.

I just bought another SATA/USB 2.0 dock to use on my 3rd ViP211. More cost effective than buying full fledged EHDs and much easier to use than enclosures.

Jonhern & bebop,
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll look into these alternatives.

Jim5506,
Could you tell me what SATA/USB dock and HDD you are using, and if you don't mind, the cost of each?
Thanks,
Ghpr13:)

One other question I have is when I contact Dish to "turn on" the EHD Output, do they just add that to your bill, or do I have to paid right then? Also, if I order the OTA mod, same question, billed or pay at time I order?
Thanks,
Ghpr13:)
