Winzip's site?

Hi .. Am i the only one.. or Winzip's home site just doesn't open up?

Have been like this for me for couple of weeks now .. i think:

www.winzip.com

hmm.. ya.. others reported so too..

What could be preventing me from accessing this site?
(some spybot, spy blaster, etc programs that i am using maybe? .. some cookie maybe?)

Try doing a traceroute to 24.248.88.71 (www.winzip.coms ip), you'll probably find some hops timing out...if so, it's probably a routing issue, there was some fibre cut not too long ago, and you might be affected.

Edit: doh, winzip.com is operated by clueless people (they seem to block icmp and traceroutes) so you'll see the last hop time out anyways), so, the last hop should be an AT&T hop instead of winzips ip/host.

If you use windows, goto Start Menus, click Run... then type:

cmd

Then hit Enter, a command prompt will pop up, in _it_ type:

tracert 24.248.88.71

You will see output like this (this is on linux so it will appear a little different on yours) ips have been munged for privacy:

That last hop (the 14 *.*, means it timed out (dropping them in this case)) would be winzips network, however they block the kind of traceroute I am doing to them (they think it protects them somehow), hops 12-14 is winzips provider, so you should see similar ips on those last 3 (they probably won't be exact since you'll likly have another route).

So, if you see multiple '*.*'s before those last hops I posted, then you might have a routing issue, which if it is, there are people who know and are working on it, the issue maybe it's a holiday weekend, but when things like this happen you SHOULD be able to reach winzip.com as the routing protocols would reroute you through another set of routers (hops). Otherwise call your ISP and see if they are having complaints, do not hang up until they open a trouble ticket and give you a ticket number!

cmd isn't _in_ Run.. when you click Run.. a box comes up where you can type: cmd then another window comes up with command prompt..but you got it on your own anyways so that's academic.

Anyhow, call your ISP, and tell them you are unable to hit certain sites (name winzip.com) and ask if there is some kind of known issue and if it is being resolved, if they say, "no", then they _should_ go thrugh a script telling you to reboot your router, etc, do as they say, it may fix it, if it does not fix it, ask for level 2 tech support, they will have more clue (hopefully), tell them the same thing (they should have your call in info on their screen by now), and they will work through more advanced steps, and hopefull resolve the issue.

I should note, the preceeding is what a 'decent' ISP _should_ do, yours may or may not be a 'decent' ISP.

I would like to be able to be more direct help, however, things like this have many causes, and a forum is not inducive to realtime exchaging of troubleshooting these kinds of issues. It could be anything from a software firewall gone wonky, a bad hosts file (a bad entry for www.winzip.com), routing issues, isp webcache issues, dns, malware etc...

SO then .. i went back to that box.. that Start / Run gave me.. and on the command line there.. typed that "tracert 24.248.88.71" that you told me..

and it went..
and the rest is history

No problem.

It could be ME, I have thankfully stayed away from that particular version, where I work, we they use Encompass, and it flat out refuses to install on ME, lots of issues with that OS.

Let us know if they fix it or not, and if so, what it was, for closure and all that.

On hold now .. with Tech Support.. ( this goof hanged up on me the 1st time.. NOT sure if accidentally or intentionally.. but i would not put it past him.. he was kinda rude and stuck up )

So on hold again now (was on hold quite long time the 1st time too )

One thing to report though..
Before we got disconnected / or he hanged up .. He asked me what Windows version i am on..
I told him Win ME...

So he said.. Start / Run .. and type "Command" there (not "cmd") .. lol - that did the trick.. that worked.. command was found i guess.. and it openned up for me MSdos box ( i ended up at c:/windows/ desktop ) ...
I guess if type proper command will take you there automatically (in ME anyhow) ..and start it...
But this way ( Command or cmd as you were suggesting) firstly puts there.. then the other command entered there ...
(my old way was kinda a short cut i guess)

In any case.. when i was there.. he told me to type : ping www.winzip.com ( i think)
and it started pinging...
Was timed out.. but he told me.. all he wanted to know was winzip's address there.. (you know.. 24.... one )
I told him.. i had it already.. and could have given it to him

then he told me to open IE...The explorer.. and we got disconnected..

I finally got through.. on hold now by other dude..
but he told me other one didn't hang up on purpose.. he put notes..that problem was on their site..and that is why we got disconnected...

this one.. got me to delete all my temp files.. ( I didn't want to delete my cookies as well.. as told him that winzip one deleted it already yesturday)

then .. he told me to use Search..and search for "hosts"..
I did.. .. and later found few matches...

and he told me to delete "hosts" or "HOSTS" .. exact word.. so i did..

this didn't help neither..

In any case .. i am all fixed now..

can go to Winzip.com ..and maybe everything is working smoother too

We had to reconfigure .. some "Network" .. the card the DSL is using.. to go to it's Properties there.. and instead of Automatically detect something.. to put something there..

and then reboot...
and all is WELL now...

I even tried some private FlashFXP sites i go to.. that i think look at my IP etc.. and CAN connect no problem there too (i was worried cuz of change above would not be able to)
But all is OK..

So after reboot - www.winzip.com is OK now...
and final word from CSR is ..that my card, etc .. or it's configuration.. MUST have been not properly configured etc..

Now all OK.. and this dude was pretty helpful..

cmd, is what newish versiond (based on NT onwards), use.

ME is pretty backwards (command is what win98/95/WFW used).

Either way glad you're fixed.
