Directv dispute with Viacom IS OVER!

With so many channels being removed maybe, just maybe this starts some kind of discussion on the future costs of programming and how the current set up may lead the consumer to one day say enough is enough?

By that do you mean a la carte/

Wow. Go on any Viacom owned website and this pop-up shows up playing an ad about the dispute. And you can't close it until the ad finishes. Very Annoying Viacom!

Yup. As bad as what they did on the Directv channels. At least Directv put the info on the bottom.

It has been interesting to read this thread here, and others very similar in other places. If it weren't for the discussions I would never have known they were in a dispute as I watch exactly nothing on any of the affected channels.

Well, not quite, I do watch the Daily Show and Colbert, but I watch them streaming in the early morning while I'm drinking coffee.

From my personal point of view they could keep all of them off and replace them with some of the HD channels that many of us have asked for. Then just tell Viacom to punt!

Call Viacom at (212) 258-6000 and ask why they are so greedy. (Record and Post)

We should offer a bounty for people to find the executives cell and house numbers.

Well, as the dropped channels include the ones my kids watch each morning (and it's summer) I'm pretty upset. I am not a big TV watcher, at the current time, there is only one show I watch religiously and that is on one of the dropped channels, plus it's a summer show, so I'm going to miss a new episode tomorrow night. I'm peeved, to say the least. My husband is the "TV addict" in our family, so he can always find something else to watch, so it really just affects me and the kids. As I'm the decision maker for these types of things in this family, this was a bad move on their part.

I found this forum by looking at comparisons of DirectTV and Dish, after speaking with DTV this morning. I asked what type of credit I'd be receiving, as I'm losing so much programming that is relevant to my household. After reading her script to me, she finally offered me $5/mo. Hmmm... in my opinion, that would compensate me for the childish ads running non stop yesterday, but not for losing so much relevant programming.

I find both of them at fault. It's all business, but allowing it to go this far should mean that DTV and Viacom should be hiring some new negotiators.

I'll be switching.

Thanks for all the fantastic information on these forums. I was uncomfortable with switching (no one likes change) but now feel more confident with it.

Problem is, they could be back pretty quickly, and then you jump to Dish and later lose channels while under a contract.

Completely understandable...if a provider can't get you the programming you want, go somewhere else. However you may want to take a couple of things into consideration:

1. Many of the lost programs are available on the net, at places such as HULU.

2. ANY provider you go to, be it Dish, FIOS, cable, or whatever, will eventually face the same situation where it cannot come to an agreement with a program provider.

3. This could last only a couple of days, it could last a couple of weeks, but certainly nothing beyond that.

If you've just GOT to have those channels NOW, I'd go to cable on a temporary basis. There's no contract and you can shut it off at any time. If this spat lasts a month, you'll be out $50-$75 at the most. The pictures won't be as good, but it's a decent stopgap. Switching to Dish permanently means you're locked in for two years, unless you're willing to come up with the separation fee which can be hundreds of dollars.

My momma always told me to never burn my bridges. She was right! ;)

If I was a fan of those channels I don't think I would switch providers yet.

Normally in these disputes they are settled normally within a few weeks (normally within a few days.)

Just a few years ago Viacom did the same thing to DISH and the channels were pulled off, but within a few days they were all back and everyone was happy again.
