Problem with some people, is that they don't understand how inside info works and how it can be inaccurate. They then take that opportunity to bust on people.

Id rather have an idea of what may happen than not know at all.

i would be the first to tell you that sometimes inside info is accurate and things just happen at the last moment.

Anyone havng that problem should try to change their BBCs. I undertand that is a major cause of this issue.

The following quote is from Bschneider:
BTW.. if someone tunes into 498 and there is a gray screen.. they probably need a new b-band convertor. They probably got a bad one.

If cannot receive 498, but both 480 and 481, say I pass, what gives? Guess I am confused, as these channels seem to give conflicting information. If I call D*, will they send me new ones at this point, or am I going to get to wait until Wednesday, and then nothing works, so I get to wait longer?

At this point that just doesnt make sense. If it were the problem, Earl would be advising to replace them not conduct poll after poll after poll about it or be reporting on changes D* is making to try to fix the problem.

You can order them online from D* at no cost. I have.

All 3 of my boxes pass the 480/481 test and get good signals when I test. My HR20-100 got 498 originally, but lost it after I had to disconnect and reconnect AC power on Saturday.
The other two receivers get 498 fine.

I think D* should go live with at least a couple of channels. No one knows if they have a problem or not right now, with the conflicting evidence.

You would think that by now D* has a pretty good idea of what the problems are.. And maybe they have solved them. But then again they may still be scratching their head with some of the issues that keep cropping up.. But I think it's going to take a roll out of channels for some of the issues to be seen and then fixed.

You need to understand that Earl is nothing more then a mouthpiece for DirecTV and hes passing along what they say.

If I were having issues, I would be calling DirecTV and getting new BBC's.

I wouldn't be waiting for someone to tell me to call, as its only going to take longer for you to enjoy the new hd channels.

That joke was done the same way on Robot Chicken a few months ago.

That explains it.they have this funny conversation were chris(seth green) is pushing the issue of robot chicken and how FG stole from them then he storms out

this is why i ordered enough spare b-band converters for all three of my boxes. so i wouldn't have to bug directv right before the rollout.

I don't see how the receiver could pass the 480/481 test and the "check signal" test with bad BBCs. And many of us, with no 498 on one receiver, are getting that. I think the problem is with finicky MPEG4 decoders--my boxes had seen no MPEG4 till 498 came along.

However, I have not tried swapping BBCs from one of my other receivers to the one that has lost 498. It's something to try.

I get 498 but ch 481 says searching and ch 480 is OK. So what does that mean?

Why not try and let us know when you get to it.

Thanks

My installer had no clue as when he did not even check these tests as he did my upgrade. I did after checking here for info. The idiot is coming back out today. Now I have to expain to him what I am suppose to see. What a crappy set up this BBC thing is.

This reputable inside source isn't the Washington Post is it? An esteemed publication such as the Post makes reference to the Smithsonian HD Channel being available this Wednesday on D*. Maybe just one of the many we soon shall see.......

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/24/AR2007092400022.html?hpid=entnews

I read the Washington Post article that is linked here.

I found this part interesting : "The channel is starting small. It will be free for three months, then be offered in a package of HD channels for a fee. "

Directv is going to have to go live with these channels and then fix any residual problems (and there probably will be plenty--bad BBCs, missing BBCs, BBCs installed backwards, wrong multiswitches, etc.) I hope it does happen on Wednesday. If not, don't blame Scott or Earl.

There appear to be a lot of crappy BBCs out there, but I haven't heard of anyone having problems with a SWM (although the number of these being tested is still small). At least they appear to be shipping BBCs without the cable being as kinked as on the ones which came with my HR20.
