You'll earn your stripes when you score your first Primestar dish (for free by scrounging), and don't start a gazillion threads asking setup questions about it that have already been answered a gazillion times

Tim, if you find a 1 meter Primestar dish (it has 3 arms in front of dish that holds the LNB), get it! That is the only dish I would get since (to me) it is easy to use, as far as adding the LNB. There are many great threads in this site that has info of setting one up. Before blasting us thousands of how to questions about setting one up, please go to Search and do all your studying there.
If you got a printer, print the information and keep them in a notebook or folder. You got lots of time available right now so that's the perfect opportunity to prepare yourself!
I got several notebooks I collected throughout the year and a half since getting started on this great hobby.
I will tell you right now, it won't be easy to set up a FTA system. Be patient and TAKE YOUR TIME!!! I have been dealing with satellites since the '80s so that help me out alot as far as understanding the satellites, their location, setting up systems, etc...
AND whatever you do, Tim, STAY AWAY from hacking your FTA receiver! That's stealing and you can be BANNED from this site forever, if Iceberg or any of the moderators find out you want to hack the receiver. This is the best site on the internet that is honest about the hobby.

While we're keeping things positive, I thought I'd throw in a few comments.
I was reading a book about Ansel Adams that I got for my birthday (15th birthday + 21 years of experience) and I learned that he started taking landscape pictures at around 14 years old. I doubt he went around bragging how amazingly talented he was for his age, but he had the benefit of starting young so he could perfect his craft over a lifetime. I wouldn't consider satellite as an art form, but there is definitely more to it than most of us know.
Perhaps you can spur on a new generation of young people who are interested in real FTA and not just the cheap thrill that hacking provides. We're all jealous of what Europe has, but perhaps if enough people get interested in viewing unencrypted channels the trend will carry over and become common here.

3 KU dishs not being used and
a bunch of LNB's, cables & switches
what are you implying?
(by the way...I do have a significant other who just laughs when she comes to my house because I usually have some crazy news feed or something like that on)

When I was 15 (1979/80) I was too busy working and chasing girls around to be watching TV, Hahaha..

At 15 I was about done chasing girls.. soon after turning 16, I was married and my girl chasing didn't start again for a several years when I then had to chase our first little girl around to get her tucked into bed
I had my first C-Band system at age 19 (approx 1992) and it was a big undertaking..........certainly had me hooked from an early age. If FTA existed back then I'd probably have been into it a lot sooner.

I enjoy the RTN's, catching a program I missed, watching the news from another area, watching a sports backhaul, watching a news feed of a major event, running a blind scan and finding something new etc.

Well..........I've so far looked at two dishes and ruled both out.......one was warped so badly that it couldn't even be used for C-Band and the other one was a 12' fibreglass unit...........with a ground mount that...well...to put it simply it would be a one shot deal, set it up and hope that you've got it set correctly 'cause repositioning it would be a big job. There's still two more, one of which is a bit of a drive ('bout 1/2 hour) and it's all disassembled. Trouble is there is now 4-5 inches of fresh snow and the low temperatures that go along with it. I've taken to more warm endeavours inside the heated shop! If I pick up one of the two (or both) I may spend part of the winter rebuilding/painting/perfecting one for spring. As it is right now, with the ground starting to freeze, any work I do now would probably get thrown all out of whack in the spring. I did order a 22khz switch so I'll have some extra capacity when I do get things ready. I still have to post some pics.
SO MUCH TO DO!!!!!!!!!!! But we're lovin' it!
There's always the front yard.. side yard..I would love to do FTA, but the wife opposes any more dishes in our backyard.
When I was 15, I held a Technician ham license, and had a tube type computer, tutored math and physics in high school. So, Tim, respect the elders amongst you, listen (read) and learn. Ask your question once, then watch for replies. If someone takes your thread down a rabbit trail, go along for the hike (or hop!) When I tutored, I enjoyed working with those that would hear out the full explaination, before asking a different (topic) question. You must build a foundation for a house before you can put the roof on it! Enjoy the hobby. You might succeed in making it a profesion. My electronics, math and physics made me a good refrigeration specialist - and that helps pay for my FTA hobby -- which again is electronics. (My first satellite experiance was sputnik reception and Echo bounce!)
