I have to say that I completely understand how Dish Network was the HD leader for a while and DirecTV caught up rather quickly, but Dish Network's ignorance of the fact that their HD compared side-by-side to DirecTV is insanely uneven really worries me. By now, you would think 1 or 2 (like USA HD or Sci-Fi HD) would have popped up for those that use HD programming as a guide for which service they choose. I understand Dish can't add all of DirecTV's HD channels overnight and be even again, but throwing loyal customers a bone should be more common sense than anything. Maybe that's just me though. LOL

Yep.. I've said it a couple of times here and there.
Maybe in the Pub , because I've read all the Uplink threads and this is the first I've heard.

There seems to have been no reason to take down the two HD PPV channels in order to put two slates.

Also, that would prevent E* engineers from watching SciFi-HD on their test equipment. :D

Seems hard to believe, are you sure they are just slates ?

Dish of course knows uplink reports are watched closely by many. I would not be surprised that they "leaked" USA and SciFi on purpose. My theory is that DIRECTV had a short term exclusivity by providing money (er marketing/transition funds) that is probably around 90 days (so should be up around the end of this week early next week depending if from Oct 1 or Oct 3 (date DIRECTV released)).

What better way to signal that Dish is going to carry the channel? They could have uplinked MP4TS1 and MP4TS2 instead of USA HD and SciFi HD and kept everyone guessing just as easily. They seem to be running slates (probably because they cannot do the uplink until the exclusivity expires), of course they are just getting ready for uplinking, they are not violating any exclusivity. And of course they have not marketed or advertised in any way they are going to carry these channels...

I know for a fact that E* would turn on USA-HD and SciFi-HD if they could do so.

They are in the channel providing business, and they will provide any channel they can.

PS And E* knows exactly which HD channels they have, and which D* has...

PPS It took D* several years to catch up with E* in HD...

free hbo

i called dish on sunday and talked with a rep on how unhappy i was with dish network and on and on..well anyway she didnt want me to switch to directv and asked what it would take me not to leave..i said more hd..anyway she offered me hbo starz.and showtime free for 6 monthes and i said how about a year..she came back and said okay..so happy again..worth a try people,,,:)

I've been thinking about why SciFi and USA HD might be running slates. When the channels didn't launch at the time Scott predicted, the supposed reason was technical problems. I'm starting to wonder if that might not really be the case. If I had to guess, I'd say that the carriage agreements/contracts were finalized and E* has permission to broadcast. Therefore, they made room ("valuable" CONUS room on 110, to be exact) and removed revenue producing HDPPVs. Everything could have been set to launch, so the channels were correctly named, but the only thing missing was content. With more and more programming being delivered to E* by fiber rather than some sort of satellite feed, perhaps there's a fiber problem and they simply don't have access to the content. Seems plausible and would answer a lot of questions, right? And since no formal announcement of carriage was made, there's really no reason for E* to make a fool out of themselves by explaining a technical shortcoming.

I could be WAY off base here, but it makes more sense than anything else I've heard so far.

SciFI HD and USA HD do not need to be fed via fiber to the uplink center. They are up on CBand satellite on Galaxy 14.

The HD PPV's were technically not removed. They were moved to an empty transponder on 129. Only 61.5 users would be affected by this, with the majority of HD installs on 129 it didn't make much of a difference. Why weren't they added to 61.5 too? They have room to do it and more but that is more to get in the way during the shuffle for the upcoming spotbeam shuffle at 61.5.
