Windows Vista Experience

I've tested Windows Vista when it came out, I didn't like it, after 24 hours of frustration I just went back to XP, good ol' XP.

Diogen,
As you see in my second post I use Both a PC and a Mac. On my Mac I have XP media center. Your quote
Start a thread "Buy a Mac, Don't Buy a PC" and stick it there...
seems a bit harsh to tell some that recommended a PC for some people and a Mac for other folks; some of whom already show interest in one. I could justify that had I said " Buy a Mac, Don't Buy a PC". Diogen, Do you use a PC or a Mac? I would guess a PC because I am even writing this. If so have you ever used a newer Mac? Or are you one of the people I used to be with the mind set that would never use a Mac because it's not a PC therefore it is inferior? The only thing that I see that may have made you post that is
I think Apple has a better made box than Dell or Gateway or brand X.
I could see you might think I was Pro Apple and down with PC for saying that but I was looking at it from a purely hardware point of view and stand by it. I have used a ton of brands and find that the 24'' Imac I got has the finest build quality of any of them. Could someone build a PC just as well? Sure they could! Apple does not use anything that the Brand X could not. Do they do it? High end Dell XPS and Alienware come close but still are not there IMO; I own them and have compared them side by side. I am not pushing anything on anyone. I wrote in this thread to tell my Vista experience. It was so bad I was moved to try something new. I never wanted to start a fight about anything but it seems you want to pick one by posting such rude things as "WTF" and telling me to "Stick it".

The only thing I question about apple's philosophy is that it see itself as a hardware company that makes software to support its hardware (a completely wrong assumption about its strengths IMO). I see it primarily as a software company that makes okay to decent hardware to support its software (which is phenomenal I might add). If MS were to truly figure out how to make good software on a consistent basis for the innovation cycles then Apple would be relegated to obscurity again. I just wish apple would stop being soo greedy in terms of hardware sales which is their main focal point. Do I think they are superb innovators with regards to software... you bet i do, however, do I think their hardware is substandard to average the majority of times... alas I do think this as well. The moral of the story is that neither company really gets it right, but MS definitely still has the edge because it is entrenched with ALL the independent hardware vendors from intel to amd; asus to abit; dell to hp; etc. As long as Steve Jobs fervently clings to what I consider a foolish business model, then apple will never reach critical mass (hell, his one major concession was the switch to intel chips over powerpc chips- a move that i'm sure he had great reservations about at the time). The sad part is that Redmond is sooooo inept at times that apple can't help but stay in the game and be a true player in the computer landscape. Just some food for thought.

Anyways, I see Yahoo! Tech has voted Vista one of the 10 Worst Tech Products of 2007
Where to begin? Vista arrived in stores months late, forced untold thousands of users to upgrade their hardware, made mincemeat of software and drivers that worked perfectly well in XP, ended up lacking many of the bold-faced features we'd been promised, and came saddled with new and annoying set of video DRM schemes. At least Vista now boasts an option for downgrading back to XP. (Now, before you Mac fanboys out there begin gloating, let me remind you that Leopard shipped a full six months late, and that many users are still suffering from sluggish, buggy systems after upgrading.)

Again, I have no argument about vista being a boat anchor in its present state. All i'm saying is that apple is special only because of it software not hardware. What i'm getting at is that if only Steve would let go of his obsession with being his own hardware manufacturer and make software for everyone then the computer would be a much nicer place.

All good points Ocnier. If Microsoft had made the first PC before Apple did it might be a different world. If Jobs would kick some of his ways it sure would help Apple out. I see Apple computers are now at Best Buy and Circuit City. Just as Dell is now at Wally World. The market has changed so much so fast everyone is trying to keep there heads up. I can remember a day not to long ago when I could build a PC for a customer and turn a buck or two... not anymore. If anyone had the $$$ and power to make THE computer of all computers you would think it would be Bill. But judging from there biggest hardware offering to date the Xbox360 ( I love my 360, only had to send it off one time due to RROD) I can't understand why the do it to themselves?

No disagreement here....

As you see in my second post I use Both a PC and a Mac.
And I've never seen otherwise...
Just to show "objectivity"...
Diogen, Do you use a PC or a Mac?
I had a Mac once. The Cube. Never ever - before and after - have I had such a nice looking piece of crap in my house...
The only thing that I see that may have made you post that is I could see you might think I was Pro Apple and down with PC for saying that but I was looking at it from a purely hardware point of view and stand by it.
Fine by me. Why in this thread?
Since Windows NT SP3 I've never had a problem to build a PC that will run 24/7. Yes,I build all the computers I use myself.
And I don't give a sh!t about the looks of them. Even less about fruity colors...
I have used a ton of brands and find that the 24'' Imac I got has the finest build quality of any of them.
Good for you. What does it have to do with Vista experience?

What is so harsh about asking Apple lovers to express their love in a different (dedicated?) thread?

Diogen.

Diogen, Now I'm an Apple lover?
A few posts before me people were talking about getting a Mac.
I was giving them my experience so far with one.
My point is you do not have to be rude. I'm sorry you did not like the Apple you had one time. It must have really left a sore spot with you. The thread was about vista and most of my post was about vista being SO bad for me that I got a Mac for a change. This is not the place for this at all. I will not take anymore of this sites time to post more on this with you. My apologies to Scott and everyone for the wasted time. Diogen, have a nice evening and a happy new year to you and your family.

I took a look at the this link because I recently purchased a new notebook with Vista Ultimate. Just to add a novice perspective to the mix, here are my thoughts (based on the article and a previous interest in purchasing a MacBook Pro)...

1) Buying a new PC is always expensive. Frankly, this one (Dell Inspiron 1720) was, relatively, no more expensive than the last one I purchased (Gateway desktop). I can't comment on the upgrade price of Vista because, well, I didn't upgrade.
2) Actually, I found configuring networks and adding HW to be much easier with Vista, than XP (Pro/SP2). I could be wrong but, I found quite a few things to be different in Vista, as compared to XP.
3) No debate here, UAC is a PITA. Easy enough to disable, however.
4) I didn't find any incompatibility issues when I integrated my new PC into two different networks. I managed to wirelessly connect to two different LAN's and to two different printers (several generations apart) with near ease. Vista took care of all of the driver installations. It even added my XBox 360 Add-on with no fuss...
5) Actually, I found Vista to be more intuitive than XP. The index/search feature allowed me to find everything that I was looking for, and more. Frankly, Vista seems more "dummy" friendly, to me (fully accepting that I am a "dummy").
6) This is probably the most ludicrous of the statements that I found in the article... In less than a minute, I connected to a printer, through my XP (SP2) desktop PC. I probably would've hunted for days for this connection, and never found it, if I were running XP on the new machine. I've actually added two different printers, wirelessly, on two different LAN's, in less than a week.

Full disclosure: I used the Windows Vista Resource Kit as a resource guide. But, honestly, I didn't get that far into it before attempting many of the activities that I described above. I just found Vista to be one of the most user friendly OS's I've ever worked with. Granted, my experience is limited to a TRS80 (Radio Shack), Apple IIGS, Windows ME, NT, 2000, XP, and now Vista. I mean, I could be mistaken but, this seems like the easiest OS I've ever worked with...

I pretty much use my pc (xp) for work and web surfing.. the laptop (vista) I use for websurfing.. since citrix crashes on it.. so does the java chat from here.. so does pretty much anything else of use.. I did find a good use for vista.. it terminal services into my xp box pretty well.. then I can actually use a decent pc.. :)

... I slipstreamed it with a old copy of xp I had lying around using NLite (if you haven't downloaded this program already then i highly recommend you do so soon). I tried it on fresh install on one of my secondary machines and it worked like a beauty. I think in total it needed updates on the web that were maybe 5 in all. Caveats to SP 3 - still no damn native nvidia raid support (which is total BS on MS's part)...
I second the recommendation for using nLite. I built a new PC last month and right before I put it together, I put together a Windows XP CD with SP2, all patches to that point, and also all the drivers for my motherboard, including the RAID drivers. Once it rebooted after the install, all I had to do was install the latest ATI drivers for the video card. I see I'll have to go back and put SP3 in there now. ;)

shoot just do like i did, install a vista "shell" on xp, looks like vista, but without any problems :)
here's what i got :
mhoefs
my wife likes the vista look, i kept the ol xp look :)

thats my biggest worry, i work at home though a vpn, i know it works great with xp, should with vista, but, you know, i aint trying nothing that would make me go back in (of course i could dual boot, but who wants the hassel :) )

Well, I'm back on Vista.

I got one of those deals at Fry's for a Motherboard/CPU combo, and got a Core 2 Duo E4500, also purchased 2GB of RAM (will get another stick next payday).

Vista so far is running smoothly. Getting all of my settings transferred over as we speak.

when you need a quad core just to run the OS adequately its time to move on.

Actually a quad core, 1 core goes to antivirus, 1 goes to windows update (or indexing or whatever else it likes to run), 1 goes to Vista system, and you get 1 for your application...

I think you over-estimate the amount of resources that processes you mention take, not to mention how many of those are running at the same time. Fire up Task Manager and watch.... Firefox is taking up 0% of the CPU's power. It blips up to 2-3% every so often. I have a whole bunch of svchost.exe entries, all taking up 0%. The killer is this one process called "System Idle Porcess". It's taking up 99% almost every time I check it !! I wish I could get rid of it....
