NCAA Basketball 2007-2008

Here we go again. Another SEC-Big Ten thread.
Haha. That's not what I intended. It's just a big rematch of last year's sweet 16 match-up that Ohio State won by one point after being down by 20. Greg Oden blocked Ramar Smith's layup attempt as time expired. It was one of the best games of the tournament last year, IMO.

North Carolina goes down yesterday. What are the chances of anybody running the table undefeated this season? Maybe Memphis?
February 23rd. Tennessee at Memphis. Both teams will be in the top 5 when the new polls come out this week.

Edit: Polls just came out. Memphis is ranked #1 in both. Tennessee is #3 in AP and #5 in coaches.

Wildcats played great. Rupp was especially rocking. Even though it was a loss for the Vols, I'm hoping Lofton now hits his streak after becoming the SEC's all-time leader in 3-pointers during that game.

Pffft. SEC is massively overrated this year.

HOW 'BOUT THEM HUSKIES? :D Huge win, minus 2 key players, at Indiana.

How about those Drake Bulldogs !! Thye are now 18-1 and 9-0 in the missouri valley conference and no one seems to pay any attention to them. Yesterday, before the Creighton-southern illinois game that was televised live on ESPN, the gameday hosts brought up drake and asked "who are these guys?" Well, they were the team that had already beaten both teams that ESPN was highlighting.
With Iowa and Iowa State both in rebuilding years, it is nice to have a state team doing so well.

...And one of those ranked teams are the Vols. Memphis will CRUSH them! Waaaay overrated.

Not saying that they'll beat Memphis, but saying a 16-2 team that has played the 2nd toughest strength of schedule in the country and is ranked 1st in the RPI is way overrated may be a little much.

I think it will be a great game. A few posts back I said that I hoped Chris Lofton would hit his stride. The last two games he has hit 12 of 23 three pointers. Tennessee's weakness is the lack of a dominant big man. I'm hoping their run and gun style of pressing and offense will lessen the need for that. Memphis' weakness is free throw shooting. That could hurt them in a close game down the stretch. Either way, a huge non-conference game this close to March is worth watching, IMO.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

They have 4 Top 25 RPI wins: @Xavier, Ole Miss, Vandy, Ohio St.

How many of those stay in the top 25 through the whole thing? 1? 2 tops? Also, the average RPI of their remaining opponents is a whopping 81.75, and that could go way up if Vandy comes back to earth. Get ready to see that RPI drop.

There's a reason Pomeroy, Sagarin, etc, are way down on the Vols.

...keep in mind you're also talking to someone who saw Memphis pretty much run away from his team at a "neutral site" too.

For a comparison, UConn only has one currently (Marquette), but the average RPI of our remaining opponents is a somewhat higher 73.

Memphis: 3 (UConn, Georgetown, Arizona), but 130 ...and that's with the Vols at 1 weighing it way up.

Since you brought up Sagarin. Let's look at that.

Vols are currently ranked 6th in Sagarin. I guess 6th is "way down".

There are only two teams in the nation that have 6 wins over Sagarin top 50 teams. One of those teams is Memphis, the other is....TADA....Tennessee. This could go up even further for the Vols since their next two games are against Sagarin #40 Mississippi State and Sagarin #29 Florida. Memphis' next two games...#70 Houston and #108 UTEP.

There are also only two teams that have 4 or more wins over Sagarin top 25 teams. Memphis is tops with 5. Tennessee is 2nd with 4.

Oh, and Memphis' SOS according to Sagarin is 99th, Tennessee's is 9th. Against that schedule, Tennessee is 2nd in the nation in steals per game only behind VMI.

Could Tennessee fall flat down the stretch? Sure, but through 19 games, the stats speak for themselves. I see no lies here, only speculation coming from you.

As a UConn fan, what's your beef with Tennessee anyway?

Thank God we have a tournament to sort this all out. A friend of mine used to say "Lies, damn lies, and statistics." I'm not saying stats are bad, but they are often used to frame what ever lie the user is trying to sell. Enron was all about the numbers, weren't they?
