Oscars moving to YT

Oh well! Never enjoyed watching a bunch of celebrities with superiority complexes give themselves awards anyway 😆

see ya goodbye GIF

IMO a natural transition and not that surprising all things considered. Moving it to one of the most popular and accessible platforms on the planet, potentially allowing Google to lean into it in a variety of ways as an entity that doesn't own studios competing for the awards.

As Sean gets into below, better and more cohesive coverage of related events and ceremonies that wouldn't be possible on a regular network without a disjointed experience, and the potential for things like an Oscar channel on YTTV.

In your poor attempt to slip politics into the non-political forum, you seem to have mistaken the Oscars for the Emmys?

... if that reply was even intended for this topic?

Personal opinions about the value of the show aside (disclaimer: not really a fan myself), I think it is significant that a once a year event with a worldwide following is moving to YT. How long before the Superbowl does the same?

What ratings? No one watches them now which is why they are moving to YT.
Well, it is certainly down from the 55 million viewers it used to get, but it is still hovering around 20 million which isn't too shabby for a non-sports broadcast. Gemini (AI) says there are several hundred million viewers worldwide, if you are inclined to believe the hallucinations of a machine.

Just out of curiosity, I googled it. According to several reported stories it was largest primetime entertainment show (i.e., excluding sports) on broadcast TV in 2024-25.

I did not contribute to those numbers, but there are people watching. A large amount. Even if the numbers watching are down from the past.

Well there are around 250 million USA Youtube subscribers and 2.7 billion subscribers worldwide so I would guess they will be fine. That is a lot bigger number of potential watchers than what a single network affiliate would have.
