I need another DVD player anyway, so I bought the A30 from Amazon for $150.
It's hooked up to my 50" Samsung LED DLP and the picture is really good. But why do I have black bars on the top and bottom? I played Bourne (HD DVD) and Star Wars III (DVD) and they both had the bars.

Aspect ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Your TV is 16:9 (1.77:1), those movies have a different aspect ratio, probably 2.35:1, so they are "skinnier" vertically than your TV screen is, resulting in them not taking up the whole screen.

There is probably a way you can zoom your TV and/or player to make it fill the screen, but it will result in much poorer picture quality.

No, I don't want to zoom. I had a Samsung upconvert player prior to this A30 and there were no bars, without zooming. I was just surprised to see them.

It depends on the aspect ratio of the movie. Some movies have bars and some do not. It depends on if they formatted the movie to the aspect ratio of an HD TV. If your Samsung showed all movies with no bars, even movieds listed at a widescreen resolution not matching an HD TV, then the player had to have zoomed the film to fill the screen

Look on the back of the Dvd box, if the aspect ratio is listed as 2.35 to 1 you will have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Did Star Wars III have the bars on your upconvert?

And as everyone has said, if the movies in their original aspect ratio are not the same ratio as your TV, you will have the bars.
