This site has the instructions on how to swap out your Bell ExpressVu Smartcard to the new card which is pictured on the site.

FINALLY it looks like they're going to try take back control of their security.

This is going to have quite an effect on the FTA industry. Piracy has fueled the industry for quite a while, and I'm sure that many of the FTA manufacturers are simply riding the piracy wave. After the piracy wave comes to a crash, many I'm sure will move on.

Securing the signal will also cause the market to get flooded with cheap FTA gear that people will be unloading for pennies on the dollar.

It should be an interesting year for FTA to see who comes and who goes..

Yes indeed, I heard that this was going to happen at CES, first ExpressVu will be upgraded then the upgrade will roll out to Dish Network.

Look for lots of cheap FTA equipment this summer. :)

Bye bye hackers!

Unfortunately, most of the stb's that specialize in "pirate firmware" aren't that good. I still want a stb that does HD and 4:2:2 . Maybe they'll be selling motors, too. A spare SG2100, for a low price , might tempt me.

:)

Without the funding from piracy will FTA manufacturers be able to afford to stay in business and will they be able to develop new receivers?

I still want a reasonably priced receiver that receives DVB-S2 Trellis and blind searches. :)

I hope they do it quick!!!! I would like the chance at a discounted hd box like the newest pansat.
Will be interesting to see if Dishnetwork actually does anything but wait.
I don't believe the tightwad will actually do a card swap unless he knows for a fact that it would fix the problem.
Look forward to some hardware bargains soon, hopefully!

Once the coders / FTA companies figure out they can't hack anything anymore, maybe they will put their efforts into 4:2:2 and dvb-s2.

I still think it would be awesome if a new satellite company was formed by putting up heavily advertised FTA programming on a Ku or old EchoStar bird. No cat and mouse, provides tv to people without OTA. Since satellite space is so expensive, maybe EchoStar/DISH would fund this...
Utilize spotbeam technology to do east / west coast channels. Add some HD channels. Possibilities are endless.

For some reason I don't see this being the end... if the numbers I've seen D*, E*, and Bell ExpressVu release are correct, I can't see how the underground community will leave that much money on the table. They will make everyone buy new boxes. Maybe it will flip flop back to the folks focusing on DirecTV again.

If a human built it then a human will break it.

We will still have the same idiots running around saying "You're signal is in my yard so it's game on!"

From what I know (and I am no expert in this by any means) but the new sercurity system is running in Europe and has been for awhile now with no breach of security on it, to make things more interesting is they are not even using the full security level that the card can do.

I for one will be happy to say bye bye to the hackers. Since SatelliteGuys started over 4 years ago, did you know that we (ok mostly Iceberg) have banned THOUSANDS of hackers from the site?

The Free-To-Air hobby will be going through some interesting times very soon. With the piracy issue hopefully put to rest (for a little while anyways), we can work on fixing the tarnished reputation of the FTA industry to clean up the common perception that all of the people using FTA receivers are pirates, crooks and thieves..

The FTA manufacturers are going to see some hard times ahead. The market is going to get absolutely flooded with people dumping their new stock, and people will also be dumping their used hacked sets for as much as they can get for them. The sales of "New" FTA gear I think will be hurting for a little bit. The Standard Definition set sales in particular are going to be pretty slow for a while because of the flooded market. I think for manufacturers like Fortec and Pansat to keep things above water, they'll need to come out with some neat products like 4:2:2 Standard Definition Sets, Hi-Def receivers with Blind Scan, and of course, good motor control to scan the skies. I sure hope that the big manufacturers saved some of the windfall profits that they've made due to piracy to now put those dollars into Research and Development of improved FTA products. Any manufacturers who were relying on the steady pace of piracy to make money will simply fall flat on their faces and disappear

I'm looking forward to receiving my new smartcards in the mail :).

They probably do not want to use the full security because if they figured out part of the security that the cards were running on then they could turn on even more security, saving a card swap. I heard a while back that there was talk about having two chips on cards in the future or where that would be a good idea so that if they figured out how to hack one of them then the other chip on the card would take over.

This could also mean that they will target DirecTv even more than ever if Dish Network gets locked down.

It does not make much sense to put the money into swapping out cards for a lot of older receivers when Dish Network is looking at doing an all MPEG-4 service soon. They would be better off swapping all of the older MPEG-2 boxes out first to MPEG-4 ones.

I wouldn't count on "very soon" Lets be realistic here. By end of year is more of a plausible situation.

A card swap takes time. No matter who the provider. It's "rumored" that their new card will not run on "some" of the old boxes. Which means that it will require new equipment for them to swap out also.

Plus, that still won't put an end to the piracy. Their still Dish to consider. For them to do a card swap will take just as long as it took Directv to do a card swap. If I remember correctly, it was almost an entire year (notice I said almost, I think it took 8 months)

Beep wrong, those subscribed to certain services will get new cards first. Those services will flip to the new security within 2 months after the first cards go out. From there they will go down the line.

Dish will also be doing a swapout as well. While it may be to the end of the year before Dish is done Dish has a few tricks up its sleeve that can keep the pirates busy until they finish the swap. And then there is the Eastern Arc. :)

Sure it may be til the end of the year before everything is done, but most of the big things will be switched over early.

I hope that both Dish and ExpressVu can pull it off.

Good news for me too!

I am over 5 year old Bell ExpressVu subscriber.
I am using extensively Ku band FTA already. I am planning to add C band in the summer. I will be probably moving up stream giving up subscription and going exclusively FTA this summer :)

For “must to see” new movie releases (I have two kids) I already subscribed to zip.ca service and they send my family more DVD disks they have time to watch. For news and editorials from around the world I am using already primary WWW.

The only thing I will eventually miss will be NBA basketball. I think the time I used to spend last few years watching NBA games I will spend with more pleasure scanning satellites and playing piano.

It will be closer to my old time habits. When I was 30 years younger I used in my leisure time to scan short waves and play instruments.
The short wave DX-ing in this period of my life was a little risky hobby but worth it. It gave me uncensored news and unlimited contacts with the people from around the world. I was living at this time in Poland where military/communist regime was in power and listening of capitalist radio stations and uncontrolled contacts with external world were prohibited.

Well lets hope this card swap with shut pirates down for more than a month this time, if it actually works this would be great, the piracy is really bad for DTV, Star choice, 4dtv and all the cable co's, I hope Bell gets it out as fast as they can, then we will have to wait for Dish.

From what I know as I personally know many pirates, most will piont there dishes to Dish if Bell goes down, the French people will go to cable or sub to Bell, some will wait for up to 3 months, foreigners will point to Dish, and hack globe cast,

Now if Bell and Dish get this out this year we will see many pirate shops closing down, and many online retailers will follow, family people would probably sub to something in less than a month, the cheap pirate bastards will wait probably about 3 months before they sub to anything while hoping for a so called "fix", and the hard core hackers mite get a sub in up to 6 months if they can't hack it, some already have a basic sub to cable and will probably get a larger package.

My Bell 6100 receiver was replaced under warranty late last year.

The NEW 6100 came without an access card.

When I called Bell about it they said not to worry about it because some receivers do not require access cards?

From that point on I haven't had access card in my 6100.

Not sure if I will get a new card in mail...strange that some receivers need them and some don't?

I did lose my picture on 6100 a couple of days ago....phoned Bell....they said they had problems with 6100's right across Canada and were VERY busy for about 24 hrs helping customers get T.V back.

I am not sure but I think their new line of receivers are cardless(9242 and 6141) as well.

The new access cards are likely headed towards 2700,3100 and 6000 receivers?

The Smartcard is build on board the motherboard on that receiver, you WILL get sent a card which will go into the card slot on your unit which will disable the smartcard built into the motherboard.
