Just looking into UK's Freesat on Ku band.

Imagine that would be that like here in the USA for that kind of service?

this is what I scanned on 28.2 East from the north of France, close enough from the UK that I could very easily receive the UK beam on a 65cm dish.

Of course many channels were encrypted and an interesting aspect is that some channels were FTA in SD but pay TV in HD

If you can get dishes aimed at 13E, 19.2E and 28.2E, it's amazing how many channels you can get. I think the highest channel count I scanned in was on 13E, I got 1699 channels!

it was strange to me that I could get some US channels FTA when those same channels are locked in the US

Definitely a different FTA world there, with some rather exotic content (like TV from Afghanistan or Turkmenistan), and a lot more multilingual
