Will there be any new HD today 4-17-08

Cartoons in HD makes sense how? Unless they are 3D or something...

What on earth would 3D have to do with it?

It would actually make perfect sense with the original Cartoon Network CN used to mainly feature old MGM and WB cartoons. Some of those Tom & Jerry's were originally in Cinemascope! They would be gorgeous in HD!

But that type of stuff makes up very little of the schedule these days. If anyone but Turner owned it I'd still be excited, because I do watch a lot of Adult Swim. I mean, The Simpson's looks fantastic on Fox-HD, even though it's not HD. But Turner will be stretching the picture and ruining it. So I will be watching standard Cartoon Network.

Whats really funny is I spent 30min on Dish Chat trying to find out when Sci-Fi HD, USA HD, and Chiller SD would be turned on and basically got the "don't know" (big surprise) but said the only way to know was to watch the website and it would be posted when available. Well, CN HD is posted and still not available!!!!

Something weird is going on at Dish this week.

First Dish sends out a press release telling us what HD Locals will be made available this week BEFORE they were actually made available! And it was right!!

Now the Dish web nerds update the web site to tell us that CN HD will be part of the Dish Essentials and dishHD (only) packages BEFORE it is actually made available!

What are they doing? Trying to provide useful information to their current and prospective subs?

I just hope the person that did this doesn't get fired

Now let me try to speculate again, because people continue to ask why why why why not new HD's or only those no one cares for.

Because of the money issue. Keep in mind Charlie already said any new HD channels added will also go to the $29.99 HD-Only pack. He also said they are working hard on the contracts for new HD's.

Let's try to put the dots together:

We know new HD's does not cost extra to carry, because DirecTV said so, therefore DISH gets the same or similar treatment, it is one of the FCC rules.

So why the hard contract talks? Because Charlie needs BETTER deals. He can not afford to add more HD's to the $29.99 pack, at some point there will be no profit made on that package at such low price.

He needs to convince the content providers to cut some slacks for his HD-Only package. As an example, if say an SD channel costs DISH $1.00 in an AT pack, and the new HD version of that SD channel cost nothing so it is simple, just add it and include it for the AT subs, because he is also paying $10 more for the HD versions.

But that cheapstake $29.99 sub pays no extra, $29.99 is all he pays. If the new HD is not added in the HD-Only pack, Dish also does not get charged $1.00 by the provider because the $29.99 cheapstake does not get it, SD or HD, so they don't pay. But if that HD is now added in the HD-Only pack, the SD version is automatically also added, because this is the standard carriage agreement, add SD, you get HD, add HD you also get the SD counterpart. The difference it now DISH is slapped with that $1.00, and they can not pass it on to that cheapskate $29.99 sub cuz $29.99 is all he is willing to pay.

So as DISH adds more new HD's that continues to eat into the profit they make from those cheapskates, at some point it will be a loss leader. Who wants that?

So DISH needs to get the content providers to make new deals, say if they sell the new HD channel only to those cheapskates, instead of been charged $1.00, maybe $0.50, and that will allow the $29.99 pack to be viable.

Of course whichever the content provider first to agree with such new arrangement gets on DISH first. And it is understandable that a provider of a more popular HD channel will less likely to agree to a lower fee so they don't get to be added.

Now since I said I was speculating, I could be totally wrong, including the speculation that the $29.99 subs are cheapskates. I am sure they are nice and generous in person:)

DISH says HD plan on track despite failed satellite Thu Apr 17, 6:23 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - DISH Network Corp said on Thursday that it will not incur any financial liability from a failed satellite launch, and its plans to offer more high-definition video programs were on track.

A satellite contracted by EchoStar Corp failed last month to reach its intended orbit, raising concerns over plans by EchoStar's sister company DISH Network to roll out high-definition television services.

In a regulatory filing, DISH said plans to boost its "HD programming line-up this spring remain on track," and it has two more satellites scheduled for launch later this year.

Well, Charlie is a business man. If Dish made a mistake by pricing the hd only pack too low at $29, oh well. We all make bad business decisions sometimes and you move one. If need be, raise it another $5 and add some damn hd.

I don't think he can until a year from the launch. Which is why in another thread I suggested an "Ultimate HDDVR" package for $49.99:)

Hey don't get me wrong, I am all for 100 HD channels for $29.99, just want to throw out a theory hopefully to explain the why why why why question. I could be wrong of course.

Seems like he could raise the prices for new subs from this day on, and leave us contract people alone for the time being. I do agree, a $49 HD only package would not bother me.

Well this cheapskate isn't buying it :)

Seriously, I keep reading about how the dishHD (only) package is priced too low for Dish to make any money. Where is the evidence for this basic assumption? AFAIK the dishHD (only) package may have a higher profit margin due to lower costs. Remember the dishHD (only) package still includes all those SD shopping channels that pay dish to be carried. So while Dish may have lower cash flow, they may actually be making more money / sub on the $29.99 pack than on the AT150, etc..

I agree, and I don't really need any more channels. I would rather they work on improving the picture of the channels we get than to try and cram as many channels on their satellites as they can. Yeah, maybe I'm cheap, but most of these channels that we pay for still have advertising on them.

Follow up to my posting that the Greenville, NC locals would be avail. today.

I called my local retailer. He says Dish changed it yesterday and that he would have to charge me $99 to come add the dish to pick up 61.5. He says Dish would only charge $29 or $49 or something like that and suggested I call them..

So I called Dish. They said my locals were not lit yet and they had no idea when it will be. The rep even put me on hold to confirm the info. So I called my local retailer back. He says that is incorrect and the locals are lit.

Basically I'll pay $99 to the retailer to hook me up on Monday. It is worth it not to have to hassle with Dish themselves. Plus I really liked the way that the installers took their time on my initial installation. They did a very nice and neat job. No mention of extending my contract at all.

GREENVILLE HD LOCALS ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO SUBSCRIBERS YET!!!!
That goes for both north AND south carolinas. Neither DMA is available at this time in HD :)

They are uplinked but not available.

Dish will NOT give you a deal until the channels are made available to subscribers. AFTER the channels are made available to subscribers THEN they will have an upgrade deal.

See ya
Tony
