I know this has been discussed before, but I was curious on how some of you keep your 622 or 722 cool? There are lots of different opinions ranging from setting them up a little to get air underneath them to cooling pads or ? Any suggestions or setups? Thanks

I use a HomeTheaterCooling.com fan (~$50) to pull hot air out of the left side of the unit. Keeps my temps below 100 degrees.

I do like the ones mentioned by concord because they have the thermostat feature. It seems to me that the fans do not need to run all the time and they can turn off and on when needed. I have to wait until I get home to measure the width of my new stand to see if it will fit.

I use a 120 volt muffin fan in it's own box with a filter on it, to blow INTO my enclosure down at the bottom left corner where my 622 is located. It washes over the 622. Then it allows the air to travel up to the top of the case, (heat rises) and exits out a hole I cut up there on the backside. Brought my 622 temps from 140 average, to 90 degrees! It's a little louder because of the fan, but you get used to it real quick.

I thought that sounded like a good idea too, but reading the description of that, sounds like the fans run at 40% at 70 degrees, and 100% at 100 degrees. Knowing how hot these 622's run, seems that would be running at some capacity all the time even with the thermostat.

I have a fan blowing out of my cabinet, hooked to a switched outlet on my audio receiver. So when it's on, my fan's on. And when we're in that room, the home theater is usually on.

Problem is, it still puts out considerable heat even when the 622 is off. So I just make a point to leave the door open when it's off and we're not in the room.

I thought about leaving the fan run constantly but figured that would just burn it out faster, so I give it a break overnight.

I tried the laptop cooler, cutting some holes in the back of the cabinet, spacing out my shelves differently, even putting the 622 on a metal shelf with holes in the bottom of it; all of those helped but only slightly. The exhaust fan is what really did the trick.

Another USB device I have read about is a laptop cooler. They cost less than $20 and require no modification.

My 722 is cooled by AC fan with a voltage regulator. Bought it pre-assembled for $25:

BUYEXTRAS.COM

It did require case mods.

Power to the fan is controlled by the HT receiver switched AC input. It is silent and the unit records an average temp of 124 F.

Installed today on one of my 722s a Dish VIP 622/722 Dual Cooling Fan System with thermoswitch. Similar to the one in this site except the one I installed has a thermoswitch. Look at the bottom of this site. Dish VIP 622 / 722 Dual-fan Cooling System - eBay (item 360045301091 end time Apr-28-08 10:19:10 PDT) Can only find the one without the thermoswitch now, I guess they have run out of them. I hope this helps bring the temp down. It hasn't changed for a long time now with all the different configurations of fans I have tried out. The outside of the case is real cool to the touch. I wonder if the temp indicator is stuck in this DVR! All my other DVRs the temp readings change a little.

The temperature indicator is the thermal sensor on the hard drive itself.

Exactly how far afield from the placement recommendations have you gone? Do you have the receiver mounted in a cabinet? Is it in close proximity to something else that runs hot?

The 722 is in wide open area. Sits on top of a VCR/DVD Recorder/Player that is off all the time. Just checked the temps. Temps are still 131 / 105 / 116. Have been the same for over a month now. Have done several exterior fan configurations during the month and the DVR has had a couple of soft resets. If it doesn't change in a couple of days I am going to unplug it and see if the temps change. Do you know what triggers the temps to change? Is it on a timer or something?

Dunno. Does the receiver ever go entirely into standby mode (all TVs off)?

Perhaps the temperature sensing circuit has failed.

Yes, all TVs are turned off at nite and all DVRs are turned off (standby mode). I think the sensing circuit has failed too. Since I have done away with the laptop cooler and started using the external fans, the outside casing has cooled down quite a bit. They use to be really warm, now they are real cool when you touch them.

Disconnect power cord for a minute, then it will start new measuring interval.

OK Smith, P. Just disconnected power for about five minutes. Did a temp check and it reads the same. Temps are still 131 / 105 / 116. I will keep checking and see how it goes. Thanks for info.
