What Cablevision Should Do

ok ok cablevision shills, im not gonna fight it out with you. You can all defend cablevision as much as you like but at the end of the day, people know there picture quality is poor, their dvr sucks, the internet is not as fast as advertised because it slows down with more people on it, the channels change slower then att uverse and fios tv, ALTHOUGH they do have some great exclusive channels which I prefer to keep then go for another service, FIOS also has some cool channels like boomerang, cnn international, more versions of some channels cablevision carries, bbc america, and MTVU.

As long as cablevision is not FTTP, they really cant compete. Anyway it will be a matter of time b4 Verizon catches up and puts channels that are good substitutes,

AND...... im actually kind of sad to see the responses from these cablevision shills. Instead of saying Yeah Cablevision should go totally fiber optic FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMPANY they say noooooo.

I mean eventually all there channels will have to go HD, what are they gonna do compress the crap out of them? THen whats the point of going HD with cablevision. Also they will have to have fewer channels. So cablevision is not futureproofing it self. Like I said despite all its flaws cablevision has a "SEXIER PRODUCT"

I mean IO looks much nicer than FIOS and the fact that they are local, they are a part of the community, and they have more exclusive local content and things like this.

WHY CAN verizon wire the whole frickin country and Cablevison cant wire 3 states (AND NOT EVEN THE ENTIRE STATE AT THAT!!!!. I mean Verizon has so many other businesses, cablevision has one, and they cant even make it the best one.

Cablevision going FTTP is for the good of cablevision and no one else, so im sad all of you defending this increasingly crapy product. :(

not correct:
fttp is NOT needed
again, with the anolog spectrum gone they will have enough capacity for all the hd channels available and then some

Because it's a lot more then just stringing fiber to a pole. Their whole node system then becomes obsolete and there are probably head end changes that have to be made. They then have to go do new drops for every house and rewire the apartment buildings in their footprint. It's one thing when you're starting from scratch, but why rebuild a system that doesn't need rebuilding? There are still plenty of ways for them to reclaim bandwidth in their existing architecture. Eventually all Family Cable channels will be digital only which will free up lots of space for HD. There is also node splitting and Switched Digital Video. All of these options will do the job and be less expensive then FTTP. There is no guarantee that Verizon will ever be able to recover the money ($600-$1,000 per home) they are outlaying to go FTTP.

BTW, Verizon isn't wiring the entire country. They can only do the areas that they have phone service in. They aren't coming to my part of CT because it's at&t territory.

With Channel Bonding coax has multi gigabits of bandwidth availible. More then they would need in the next 10 years. Verizon is spending BILLIONS and BILLIONS to upgrade their plant why? Because they must! their twisted pair can not support the bandwidth coax can so they are FORCED to upgrade (look at how poor ATT service is using the twisted pair) Cablevision has the option to upgrade their exsiting plant to keep up with demand, which is billions cheaper then going FTTP. Coax has A huge amount of BAndwidth possibility its not the cable that is the limit at this time, its the equipment itself. By bonding the freq and using SDV Coax can add HUNDREDS of HD channels at great quality and offer internet up to 155mbit. (Most web servers at this time run on 100mbit ports) So it makes no sense at all for them to go FTTP at this time, 5 years from now? Maybe, of course Fiber atm is cheaper then coax, the real cost is installing it. I know most cable companies are working to cut down the number of nodes, which will decrease the demand on each node and increase the amount of fiber in the nieghborhood.

So inconclusion, while it would be nice if everyone just went FTTP the cost effectiveness at this time would not beneift the cable industry. They are competeing against HUGE companies, ATT Alone is bigger then the ENTIRE CABLE INDUSTRY! So saving every dollar they can to compete is needed. Verizon and ATT have huge pockets, so doing things the cost effective way is the most important thing at this point.

Various times you have stated that the DVR sucks. Just curious what sucks about the DVR. Please be specific.

The OTA switchover to digital does NOT affect cable tv at all.

It sure does! It forces all customers to use cable boxes.
This means Cablevision can move to a 100% digital system, thus freeing up tons of bandwidth.

Or am I missing something?

You're missing something.
Only full power OTA stations have to stop broadcasting in analog. Cable companies had two choices:
1. Go to a 100% digital system and require a cable box for any channels. An expensive option due to the need to buy cable boxes, and a potential PR nightmare since many people like having the option to just connect a cable without a box.
2. Simulcast the OTA stations in analog until at least 2012 so people with analog TV's can continue to get the OTA stations without a box.

CV chose option 2, except for the few systems that were already doing option 1 (Bronx, Brooklyn, Patterson, Newark). This doesn't apply to Family Cable so CV can continue to turn off the analog simulcast of Family Cable channels, like they are doing, to free up bandwidth.

Well the most annoying thing is when I set a show to automatically record every week, My Dvr always cuts of about 1 minute off the show from the beggining and the end of the program. Also I used to have a TIVO that used to have little features i like but has dissapeared with cablevision like 30 second skip. And the interface is just very downbeat. Its not a nice interface to use. If you ahd TIVO you would understand how TIVO is just a much more user friendly, and attractive looking product.

But at the end of the day my main complaint is the fact that it cuts off 1 minute from the beginning of shows, and one minute from the end.

The cutting off is the TV networks fault for not airing the shows in the time slots they list in the schedule. Why do they do that? To screw up DVR's so you have to watch live and see the commercials. You can go in every week and pad the beginning and end so that doesn't happen though.
But the real question is, if you hate the DVR, and loved your TIVO, why don't you get a TIVO?

So they are not slowly moving channels to the digtal tier?
I stand corrected:rolleyes:

I don't have that problem, but you can simply edit the scheduled recording and add one minute.

I agree 100%. I am a fan of the show Ghost Hunters. When it's on, it's from 9-10. Sci-Fi was so bad at one point that I now tape it from 8:59-9:05 to be sure I get everything. Remy is right, there is nothing wrong with your DVR, it's the network your recording from.

FTTP is a PR tool. What happens when the Verizon tech gets to your house? Oh yeah, he uses coax, he may even re-use what the cable company put there years ago.

Does your TV have a fiber input, because mine doesn't.

Also, in your original post you make it sound like converting to fttp is easy. Cablevision has over 4 million customers. Let's set up appointments with all of them and roll out the techs. I'm sure they will be done in no time.

You are ill informed sir. How much is Verizon paying you to post in this forum?

There is a reason that Verizon isn't winning on LI.

I forgot to add that little detail to. that except for internet verizon is using the same Coax in your house that CV is using.. The Coax is not where the limit is, its the equipment itself that is the limiting factor. That equipment can be upgraded a lot cheaper and quicker then going to 4 million homes to run fiber drops, and put in the equipment on the house to convert it to coax. Its easier for Verizon to do it because they are going to the home for the first time, they dont already have 4 million tv customers to move over.

Ditto!! you can start the program 5 minutes before it starts or add 5 minutes after it ends. Probablly never read the manual. Then again he'd complain about Dish Network or Direct TV if he had them. Just one of those people who have to complain about something.

well i cant have tivo cuz cablevision went sdv, and i have some channels that i will lose if i have a tivo. And another thing I KNOW THAT u can set it to tape 5 min before and 5 min after or whatever, but then u have to do that all the time. You have to schedule to record your show all the time and u just cant set iit to record new episodes, because if you do it will always tape from the time slot. I agree it is the networks fault , but Tivo used to let u preprogram all of this info so you would only have to set a show once. With cablevision you would have to set it up every week to not miss the beggining and end of a show. thats very annoying.
