Turned on the Olympics on USA Network this morning and after a few minutes of watching a message popped on the screen. "This program is available to watch in 4K Ultra HD. Press Select to watch." so I pressed select and it took me to the USA 4K Channel.

The picture is greatly improved, but to me it appears to be upconverted 1080p. Is this real 4K or upconverted?

I kept flipping back and forth between the HD and 4K channel and am trying to figure out if they are upconverting it... or down converting it for the HD channel.

Anyone know?

I do think that it is very cool that we have so much live 4K content this weekend.

Over on AVS they are saying it is upconverted.

Will there ever be a chance, that Dish will ever get 4K channels. It would be nice, if Dish would get a few channels in 4K without upconverting, then I guess we have to be happy with what we can get.
Doubtful there will be 4K Channels, first, Traditional Providers are losing subscribers at a pace of 5-6 million a year ( the only one to continue and show gains is YTTV), so no money incentive to do so, second, the content producers have decided streaming is the best place for 4K.

One example is CBS, their content is shown at 1080i on Cable/Satellite, while in 4K on Paramount+, Tracker, Sheriff/Fire Country, Elsbeth, NCIS are just a few examples in 4K, FX is another, 720P via Traditional, 4K on Hulu.

What 4K Channels are there for DISH to get? I don't really know of any 24/7 4K Channels being broadcast in the USA.

DISH has been good about carrying most 4K events when they are available.

The big question from me however is, are any of these 4K events actually real 4K or are they all upconverted 1080p?

Doubtfull!!! even direct had a fulltime 4k channel now it's gone and most of that was up converted. The best way to get true 4k is via a disc spinner

if everyone switched to true 4K overnight think about what a disaster that would be . to be honest we have friends in the film industry that shoot in 16K!!! but guess what they down convert it!!!!

What is "real 4K"? An actual 4K source that isn't compressed is around 12 Gbps.

Uncompressed 1080p is nearly 3 Gbps.
