Today at 1:30 PM I decided to see what I had subscribed to with the HD only package. I looked at the HD channels I get not including all the sports. Here is what I found. This took a long time since 90% of the channels changes landed me in a commercial, which I think takes up more than the program now, not counting the splash for the channel you are watching and up coming programs and the program you are now watching splash. Almost all of the decent HD was hdnet programming, and Cinamax which I get for $0.01. I think I have been had. This is not what I subscribed to for 2 years.
I realize that the programming source is part of the problem but then it shouldn't be called HD if it isnt and one worse than non hd and many about the same as non hd. Only the Hdnet and Cinimax stations hold a candle to OTA HD

Not to beat a dead horse, but you would have had a lot more "Decent HD" channels if VOOM was still being carried by Dish.

Disney East and TOON are both upconverts, SD source upconverted through software to HD. I find it interesting that you thought that it was decent HD.

I didn't examine the rest of your list.

You should have seen VOOM when it was sending High Bandwidth TRUE HD in MPEG 2 when they were on their own satellites.

MPEG 4 was supposed to help, but from what I've seen, the providers have focused on optimizing stream size, and not on optimizing picture. All of the MPEG 4 feeds have a soft focus on the image.

I am afraid that TRUE HD is no longer available from any provider, even over the air broadcasts.

There are some PBS over the air broadcasts that still have decent screen pop. It used to be that when you saw true HD, you felt like you were looking through a window at true life.

Yes, and the same shows over and over and over again for months at a time. I think Voom had a total of 1 maybe 2 months of programming in their whole library.

Just curious, what can Dish (or DirecTV or any cableco) do about these complaints ?

Tdillon:

I saw Voom when it was a separate source I was a subscriber long before they went down. I still have the Voom receiver.

Notice I said I think. They are cartoons and there is not much content or detail so I can only say it looks better than sd but I don't watch cartoons anyway. So its irrelevant to me.
The reason I suscribed in the first place was for Voom, HGTV, TLC, Disc, Sci, Scifi Hdnet.

Actually Disney does have some real HD, although they are all kids shows.

Please tell me how could I have known that less than a week after I subscribed they would dump Voom, and how could I judge the picture until AFTER I got the receiver and took a few days to look at the stations.?

dish is a terrible company that treats its partners like crap and their highest paying highest margin customers equally like crap!

Since they dropped VOOM HD I have found little if anything to watch in the HD channels; I just scroll through and get more depressed. Voom HD recently added a number of new shows on Treasure HD, and Equator, etc. they have far less re-runs than these lame current channels. and remember zero commercials.

Channels like the Travel channel maybe have one new series a year the rest is re-runs, WFN is filmed with a redneck's handycam, who the @%$# cares about the weather and cartoons in HD? dish keeps twisting the truth about them being the leaders in HD; they are the leaders in poor customer service and are charging more than Directv whom has more HD. Them dropping VOOM HD has convinced me to cancel by July. I calculated my cost and I would save over $600+ the first year and after that special discount I will still save enough to buy a couple of blu ray discs each month; don't worry about any penalties if you are a newer customer as they will likely waive them if you bitch if not do the math and you will still come out ahead with a short payback.

Disney East isnt an upconvert channel... and i am very shocked that TBS would pillow box since they have never done it before.

Here is the deal, If you don't like your "HD only package (which is cheaper than trying to get just those channels in SD)" then drop your service and go somewhere else that has more HD... Oh wait nevermind, EVERYONE gets those same HD issues on those channels, and only D* has more channels (though not many). Seriously people DEAL WITH IT. It is pathetic to see all of these posts about X channels have no HD on them but they are HD channel. It isn't the provider's fault, it is the channel's fault. You could not have what little HD they show and have NOTHING, but these channels decided to go ahead and launch and show what little HD they have in their library.

Can we get a forum where E* and D* users can go and complain about their HD channels not having HD on them? Wait a second, if we did that then the E* forums would die, NEVERMIND!!!

And i dont think we get 185 in HD (Hallmark non-movie channel).
I noticed that too. It is part of the DishHD (HD only) package, but is not listed as HD in the Menu Guide.

Apparently we all don't agree on what constitutes a valid HD package, versus what is not. Personally I side with those that feel these pseudo-HD channels are not legitimate regarding what I expect.

I don't agree with those simplisitic answers such as "then drop your service and go somewhere else that has more HD." Where else are we going to get what we want? I would expect Comcast and Direct have the same issues. I feel the problem is with the channel providers, as they are they are not being true to what they are advertising themselves as.

Bottom line, I have a nice 52" Widescreen HDTV, and I want to enjoy it that way. I will pay for a service that can provide the feeds the way I wish to view them. Unfortunately, it seems the providers are still years behind the actual display technologies

Just like the commercial says, "They wouldn't know HD if it sat in their lap and called 'em mamma"
The point most of you are missing is; Dish can't give you something that isn't there. If the channel is HD, but the provider is only supplying SD content, what is Dish suppose to do about it? I guess Charlie is expected to grab an HDCam and go film the show himself? Grow up, stop complaining. And for the guy who can save over $600 by switching to Directv(LMAO), then just do it and stop your crying. If you could save that much and they offer more, then everyone would switch. And the last time I looked, that hadn't happened. And remember, Echostar tried to buy Directv, not the other way around. Successful companies don't look for ways out of business!!!!

I can't believe you spelled Cinemax wrong. Anybody who's anybody that has a love for satellite and cable television knows how to spell this infamous cable premium channel. Known for second rate/second run (to HBO) movies and soft core porn, "Skinimax," it is sometimes referred to as. From teenage masturbation to a lonely adult Saturday night, everybody knows this channel well enough to spell it correct in such a blog. And starting your own thread, you should have been extra careful to spell Cinemax correctly.

What gives?

BINGO! That's where all the outcry should be going. Dish just passes it along. So does Direct.

Who gives a crap? Are you going to start going after Scott and Bob's mis-spellings in their threads?
You are not even a Dish Network subscriber, why don't you crawl back to your DirecTv forum hole, skank?

You again? Can't you stay out of the threads you don't care about anyway? Voom is gone, you're happy, now why don't you leave it alone?
