you can call them......they will be MORE than glad to upgrade you and charge for the new box and installation
you won't get a free upgrade.....no such thing as free with Dish Network unless you push VERY hard for it
I think there may be some confusion within this thread. Are you referring to the free upgrade for current customers with MPEG2 HD STB's who will need a new MPEG4 HD STB to continue to receive the HD channels they are today? If so, then that is free. If not, then it will cost you some upgrade fee.
If this is for the free MPEG2 HD to MPEG4 HD upgrade, you can try calling them and see if they will accommodate you sooner rather than later.

So, you can call Dish and probably get your FREE upgrade sooner rather than later. Try it.

i called dish and upgraded my 922 for a 722 and added another dish to my roof for free.Called wednesday and by friday at 8:30 am and everything installed.
Again, this is reference to the MPEG2 HD to MPEG4 HD transition, all current subs with MPEG2 HD STB's will be changed out to new MPEG4 HD STB's (and any necessary labor and additional parts should they be required) to receive the same HD services they do today at NO COST to the subscriber. This has nothing to do with the standard HD upgrades offered by Dish.
nomad_1002 is an excellent example. He had an MPEG2 HD STB (DP942); Dish is swapping that out for an MPEG4 HD STB (ViP722--a "like" or comparable model, DVR in this case) at no charge to him. Dish is changing all MPEG2 HD channels to MPEG4. This is not the customers "fault." That is why Dish is upgrading those with the older MPEG2 HD STB's for free. Dish is trying to "take care of" it customers who invested in the old MPEG2 HD STB's, whether it be owned or leased. Now, if they had only done the same with the old 8PSK module several years ago.
I was told it was "free" with a 24 month contract when I called to get my 811 changed out. Some other people I know have been told the same thing when they called.
Dish will exchange for FREE only LIKE-MODELS. So, if, today, you have an 811, then Dish will provide a 211, the MPEG2 NON-DVR model for the MPEG4 Non-DVR model. If you want to UPGRADE your non-DVR model for a DVR model, then you will have to do so using one of Dish's current upgrade offers that require a fee and commitment.
If you are trying to exchange an MPEG2 HD STB for a LIKE-MODEL, MPEG4 STB, and you are receiving HD channels today, then there should be NO CHARGE. If you are being told differently, please contact the Executive Offices and get it straightened out as a no cost exchange for LIKE-MODELS. Please note FREEMAN and NOMAD_1002 posted experiences in this thread. That is how the swap-out should be.
Talked with a close friend today. He received a letter from E* announcing the 2 to 4 upgrade. He will require a different dish to continue his HD essential pack. He was assurred that whatever was required would be "NO CHARGE". He set up the job for this monday. The CSR did advise him that his monthly charge would be $.01 higher for the HD package based on his SD package cost.
Ok, that makes sense. This is what transpired when I called to upgrade. When I originally got DISH several years ago I ordered one HD receiver and one SD. They installed two 811s. When I called to change to the MPEG4 receiver, I told the CSR I only needed one HD receiver. She said "We could install a 722 and a new dish for you tomorrow", and it will cost you one cent more a month with a 24 month committment and no charge for the installation. I was truly happy to get rid of those stupid 811s, and a 24 month committment is worth it for the 722.
There is no charge and no additional commitment for swap out of mpeg2 hd receivers. My Dish 6000 is being replaced with a 211. A few weeks ago I asked for this change and they wanted $25 and a 2 year commitment for the swapout. Glad I waited. I also have directv. They are replacing my dish, an HR10-259, and 2 Hd mpeg2 receivers this week - same deal - no charge and no additional commitment now vice big bucks earlier.
So if you have MPEG2 HD equipment from either, now is the time to change out. You will not own the new equipment though, even if you own it now - just lease.
Does anyone think these deals would be available if there was only one satellite provider? Isn't competition grand?
