A lot of Olympic HD missing from Dish

The short of it:

NBC will be broadcasting ALL OF THE OLYMPICS in High Definition using these networks:

NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD

Dish subscribers WILL NOT see a large portion of it in HD because it will be on MSNBC-HD (launching soon), Oxygen HD and Telemundo HD.

Made the obligatory calls and emails and those channels, as one CSR said, are "Not on any upcoming HD lists that I have seen."

This could be a disaster since one of the most popular events, gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, will both be on Oxygen HD.

IF true, this is very disappointing. I thought that with the recent addition of several NBCU channels in HD, things would be ironed out. But it looks like one will have to switch to Direct to get all the olympics in HD.

Actually, according to the NBC sports press release, the only channel they clearly mark showing Olympics in HD is Universal HD. From the sound of it, the others would be SD feeds (possibly upconverted feeds). This is also (most likely) why Oxygen and MSNBC are in preview right now.

((BTW D* doesn't offer MSNBC, Oxygen, or Telemundo in HD either - d11 isn't slated to be online until september - last I heard - so that service won't offer much more than e*))

Let's get the hysteria straight:

Through three dayparts, NBC, which will air its 11th Olympiad, surpassing ABC’s U.S. network mark of 10, will present 225 hours over the 17 days, including live primetime coverage of 32 gold-medal finals for swimming, four nights of gymnastics, beach volleyball and the men's and women's marathons.

For its part, USA Network will features live coverage of Team USA. Starting Aug. 9, men’s and women’s hoops and soccer players will be key “characters” of the network’s 165 hours of coverage from China. It will also offer live tennis, volleyball or water polo through the final day.

MSNBC has 175 hours over 19 days in store, as it will present opening round soccer match coverage of Aug. 6 and Aug. 7, before the Games officially begin. With a schedule from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., the news network will also showcase long-form coverage of softball, beach volleyball, wrestling, basketball, volleyball and weightlifting

Financial news network CNBC will carry 95.5 hours. Following the Closing Bell, CNBC will offer boxing from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (ET), before returning from midnight to 4:30 a.m. with as softball, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling and badminton.

Oxygen, which NBCU acquired last November, also gets into the Games with 20 hours, notably providing a daily gymnastics recap. Equestrian and tennis are also scheduled.

In its second Olympic go-round, Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo, which reaches 93% of U.S. Hispanic households, will present 380 hours of Olympic coverage over 19 days, exclusively in Spanish. Telemundo will feature live men's (starting Aug. 7 with a pair of matches) and women's soccer, basketball, gymnastics, diving, volleyball, as well as track and field, swimming and baseball. The network will focus on participating Latin America nations and Hispanic competitors.

As for Universal HD, it will offer 24-hour HD simulcasts and encores of coverage on CNBC and MSNBC. All told, it will present 379 hours of Games coverage.

Telemundo? I could understand Univision. However, very few households in the US have access to Telemundo. Even here in Austin, TX we don't have a Telemundo station. (The closest Univision station is 50 miles away, but that's another matter.)

And as far as this goes:

In addition to the 3,600 hours, NBCU is also providing coverage of the entire men's and women's soccer and basketball tournaments through Soccer (58 games) and Basketball (76 games) NBC Olympics specialty channels. Two foreign language channels in both Korean and Mandarin Chinese will feature a variety of Olympic events.

I thought the Olympics dumped women's softball because the U.S. dominated the competition. Is it just in for 2008 and out in 2012 or is this some other softball?

Beijing is the last Olympics for softball. As long as all the men's USA basketball is on I don't really care. If they had oxygen hd and cnbc hd they would be good for the Olympics then worthless for the rest of their lives.

I know. I remember when they bought Telemundo. (Universal wanted to stay independent and costed too much money.) However, Telemundo is still out of reach for me.

Back to the Olympics...Dish has been looking a little better since they went down to 80 HD channels. Maybe we won't see a gazillion artifacts during the telecasts.

I'm sure E* will tweak the signal compression lower on those channels during the olympics. I remember the picture was pretty good last time around in 2004. Then again, they had a lot less compression back then.... we'll see....

Relax. All games are filmed in 1080p. The only networks carrying HD coverage are NBC-HD, USA-HD and Universal-HD.

Actually Virgina Tech beat team USA in exhibition last week. So we will see how dominate they are. The announcers said to expect the pack to be tighter this go round because the rest of the world is now using the 6 extra feet to pitch in their leagues. Last time it was a huge change, now they will be used to it.
I absorbed this because I was flippin' channels and the Virginia Tech picture was in the middle of a no hitter and she was hot. :up

2008 is the last year for softball AND baseball. They are out in 2012, but can request to be reinstated in 2016. Softball is out because the US dominates. Baseball is out because of the lack of major leaguers.

NBC is NOT FILMING anything in HD, although they are using their HD Cameras and capturing the Images and Audio and storing it Digitally on a TAPE Medium or Solid State Memory chips. All that said NBC is not using any FILM Stock to capture HD.

Nothing is FILMED in HD. Content can be captured onto film and then remastered into HD, but again native HD is NEVER captured on to film.

I think he was just using the term generically. I used to be in the film and video business and people often used the word filming for video taping, even though they knew better.
