New Channels

I made the switch to Dish last month from Charter. I got really tired of their DVRs. Dish's VIP 722 is superior to Charters DVRs. I have a 500 gig external storage connected to one of the 722s. I kept Charter's basic cable and their Broadband service only. Check it out

You got a neat setup there!

I had Dish for many, many years -- but when I moved to Smyrna, GA (Outside Atlanta) -- I had no satellite line-of-sight and had to settle for Charter. As many posters have mentioned, the Customer Service sucks and had a really bad install experience (not to mention the fact that they had NO available DVR's -- let alone an HD DVR!!) So I bought a Tivo 3 with cable cards and I've been generally happy. And today, I wanted to add a channel to my favorites and discovered a big list of new HD channels available in the Tivo guide (although none of them have been activated yet!) They include Animal Planet HD, Discovery HD, Weather HD, AMC HD, IFC HD, TLC HD, WE HD, FUSE HD and a couple of SD channels: TV One and American Life TV Network! I hope this isn't a false alarm -- but would be truly welcome!

The 8 new HD channels were lit up today. So now, Charter in Smyrna, GA gets:
Animal Planet HD
TLC HD
Discovery HD
WE HD
Fuse HD
AMC HD
IFC HD
and
Weather Channel HD
In addition, TV One and WSB DT2 (RTN) were added today as well.
Always good news when new stuff arrives!
Now, if they would just add WATL-DT, WGTV-DT and CNN-HD -- I'd be satisfied for quite a while!

Any word on getting new HD channels in Newtown, CT? The lineup has been stuck at 19 channels (with 5 of them premium) and they don't even offer ABC-HD.

Looks like ABC-HD isn't coming anytime soon to CT.

Charter/LIN TV Retrans Talks Break Down - 6/4/2008 11:57:00 AM - Multichannel News

LIN, which owns about 11 stations in seven markets in Charter territory—in Grand Rapids, Mich.; Green Bay, Wis.; Hartford-New Haven, Conn.; Springfield, Mass.; Dayton and Toledo, Ohio; and Providence, R.I.—said that its current deal with Charter is scheduled to expire on June 30.

In a statement, LIN said that its negotiations with Charter “appear unlikely to result in a retransmission consent agreement. As a result, LIN TV expects Charter to discontinue carriage of its television stations when the current contract expires.”

I don't think Charter has gotten CBS HD back too. They had it and lost it. At least in the St Louis area.

LIN, Charter Consent On Retransmission Pact - 7/1/2008 3:40:00 AM - Multichannel News

LIN TV Corp. and Charter Communications have reached a retransmission-consent deal covering the station owner’s broadcast and digital signals.

Charter carries 13 stations owned- and/or operated by LIN, whose contract with the cable operator was set to expire on June 30.

“We are pleased to have signed this agreement with LIN TV for the benefit of our customers, said Ted Schremp, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Charter, in a statement. “In addition, we look forward to expanding our high definition programming with LIN TV stations in many of these communities.”

Is there any word on HD in easten CT? We still get very little for HD here. For the price, I'd expect some more channels. The service out this way is very poor too.

The service out this way is very poor too.

As far as Charter goes, I have learned 2 things:

1. They are VERY slow about adding new channels. They would rather charge you a high price and not provide new channels that would cost THEM more money.

2. Customer service is poor EVERYWHERE. I know here in the McKenzie TN area, we lost our local office. So when I call Charter, I no longer get my local office. I have talked to Charter in Canada and India (I know because I have asked where they are).

The office still is there, but when you call the number in the phone book a recording says to call the 1-800 number. I've went to the office and talked to them in person instead of calling the 1-800 number, which would connect me to India or somewhere.

Yes the office is still there but I believe that the customer service was better when it had more of a "local" representation to it.
Yeah, I prefer to talk to them, instead of someone thousands of miles away.

When I canceled my digital cable, I didn't call anyone. I just unhooked my box, took it to the office and cancelled it then and there. That way, I know it's been done.

Being added on 8/13 in Western NC/Upstate SC:

712 - The Weather Channel HD
713 - Discovery HD
714 - TLC HD
715 - Animal Planet HD
716 - TBS HD

This will bring our channel count slowly upward to 25 full-time and 3 part-time HD Channels.

I get good service here, unless you have call in because something breaks.

it must dependes where you are. in st louis, the few problems i have had i was happy with the service i got. had charter since voom (dbs) went boom. though we have about 35 hd channels, of course want more/

How often though does Charter add new HD channels as compared to other cable companies and both DBS companies? It seems to me that if you have an HD TV, satellite is the place to be.

Every 6 months, if not even more.
They are slow, they are the worst cable company out there.
