I have an HR10 DVR with Tivo. I would love to upgrade to HD, but I am unwilling to give up Tivo. What are the prospects for a Directv-Tivo hardware reunion?

The chances are slim to none. aren't the tivo's for cable pretty buggy anyways?
I still have a TiVO for SD and now that I am used to the interface on the HR20, I much prefer the HR20 to the TiVO. In fact it has gotten to where the TiVO annoys me at times.
TiVo, although a nice unit, IMHO enjoyed (past tense) a great marketing machine and coupled now with user's unwillingness to learn; the "change wall" that predisposes them to resist. The other company's DVR units are just as good. In fact the ReplayTV (now owned by DirecTV) was superior to the TiVo even back in "the day" but TiVo's marketing was like Vonage is now; always "out there" making buzz; even though they aren't the best or do anything more or cheaper. They developed a name. YMMV!
D*'s DVR's are no TIVO. If you like TIVO, you probably won't like D*'s offerings. You can probably get used to them ,even maybe tolerate them eventually, but make no mistake, they are NO TIVO. Better? To some folks, yes. To others,like me, not on your life.
Doesn't really matter though, if you want D*'s HD and you want a DVR, you will get the non-TIVO.
My personal opinion? After trying the new DVR for 9 months, I left D*. It was totally underwhelming to me.
I have no use for VOD,media share, ESATA storage or anything like that. I wanted a rock solid HD-DVR to record and play back programs, with all the functions of a TIVO. The HR20 wasn't it, unfortuantely. Some folks have good luck with them, some don't.
Good luck with your decision. Just remember there is NO TRIAL PERIOD for D*, unless you live in a state that allows it. Once they install it, and you sign for it, it's YOURS for two years. Well, kinda. You still have to send it back should you cancel.
And pay the end of contract too. Its a Win-Win. For directv anyway.
Tru dat. I'd have to believe that the vast majority of folks with HD for whom TiVo is the only answer, can't really understand that personally, have already made the migration to Cable or FIOS, if they're fortunate. I prefer the HR20 to the HR10 myself and never really cared for TiVo Suggestions. I shut that feature off on every TiVo I've owned.
Clock is ticking on the DIRECTV-delivered HD on the HR10, so the OP needs to make a decision quickly.
I miss file extraction myself. I guess if you like playing musical hard drives the HR20 series is ok but file storage is like the flinstones car and archiving with any order to the files is nearly impossible.
Yep, raw file extraction is the feature I would want most as well. I still use my ReplayTV to capture SD programming I want to archive.
Do not take this wrong because you are more than entitled to loving your tivo software, it is awesome, but typically when that is said "I wont give up tivo" it is because they have never even used the new D* software and assume it will not be any good. Like some of the others here I have 2 SD DVRs with Tivo. Hell the philips directivo I bought some 4 years ago now is still rocking! but the software is very very dated, the guide is dated. D*s new interface is much improved and featurewise is damn good.

I'm perfectly happy with my D* HD DVRs, but I'd much rather have a Tivo HD DVR that could do MP4 that worked on the D* network. For four simple reasons:
1. The two Active tuners mentioned. I used to watch two shows at once with little to no hassle. It rocked!
2. The Guide. I could see so much more at once in the guide. it made scrolling and recording so much easier.
3. The overall interface, especially as it related to managing recordings, fast forwarding or rewinding through shows and managing season passes.
No, would I leave D* just to get a Tivo? Nope, but there is no doubt in my mind that the overall experience on a Tivo is superior having used both for a considerable amount of time.

I like Tivo, Dish, Directv and Windows Media Center. I can use either one. I actually prefer the WMC and Directv's with Tivo next and Dish a far far last on the list. All work fine and I was a huge Tivo lover but I've moved on.
Just one? Okay, in the year and some change I had the HD TIVO, it never missed a recording. The HR20 missed at least one a week religously, in the 9 months I had it. Add to that constant grey screen recordings, its no TIVO. Not even close.
That, outrageous policies, constant price increases, and the lack of DLB on their excrement-box DVR was enough to get rid of D* in my house. I will NOT pay for something that does not meet my needs. I don't care HOW many HD channels D* has.
And I wanted the OP to know that. Not everybody worships at the Directv Altar.
absolutely nill. Now this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't want anything to do with Tivo anyway.
