Echostar 148 License - FCC Request

Echostar has requested FCC authorization to maintain their 148W license for 16 transponders (the failure) inactive for a period exceeding 90 days while they search for a replacement.

The plan is to move Echostar 5 over to 148 after Ciel 2 goes up. I thought it was out of fuel?

"Central to those redeployment efforts is the successful launch of Ciel 2 at 129° W.L., a Canadian DBS
orbital location, which could free up the EchoStar 5 satellite that currently provides service from
129° W.L"

There are a few more places in the "West". Specifically, Juneau, Fairbanks, Medford, Abiline, San Angelo, Rapid City, Casper, Lubbock, and
Cheyenne.

EchoStar 5 is as good a suspect as any now. I think the key words in this post are while they search for a replacement

Fuel estimates always seem to be a guess. These estimates would have had EchoStar 4 burned up on re-entry long ago. :)

Because Echostar 5 is a POS. Ask anyone who uses the 129.
and why is a guy with 4 D*'s HD DVR's worried about E* 148 satellites. Do the HR -20 and 21 pick them up now?

Just wondering why are they moving Echostar 5 to the 148. Isn't Echostar 1 in better shape? Older yes , but whats wrong with it. Is E*5 going to be a spare?

Just because E5 does not do good at 129 does not mean it is not good for 148, since 148 is more of spot beams right?

What kind of question was that? It was you who seemed running scared about 148, not me.

I have 4 HR21s and one 625, one 722, if that was your question, I am not worried. BTW, I have zero problem with my 129.

EchoStar 1 is hard wired to provide polarity of Odd-numbered TPs only. Therefore it cannot provide the Even-numbered Tps required to maintain the license in question. EchoStar 5 can provide both polarities.

With only having to power 16 TP's, E5 could be at full power on those TP's to help overcome signal fade from the wobble. There must be more fuel left than anyone estimated. Hopefully enough to keep E5 going for another year or so.

What will they do with Echostar 1? leave it incase E*5 has the same fate E*2 had?

Dish will eventually have E6 and E8 free up. They are just on (or going to be on in the case of E8) temporary assignment until the satellites for their slots are completed. The FCC certainly knows all the difficulties of getting a replacement into orbit, Dish wants to be sure they are following all the proceedures so they do not have problems when they have a replacement.

Echostar certainly seems to be wringing their money's worth out of their satellites.
