HD OTA recording only

Ok I recorded 1 min of the HD test transponder over at AMC3, IE: TV 4. At the time color bars were showing with no movement. I belive this tp is in MPEG2

1 min of recording time = 133 MB
times that by 60 = 7.980 Gigs per hr of programing

7.980 divided by 704182 (the size of my 750 gig hd formatted) = 88.24 hours of programming in mpeg 2

I wonder why it is so difficult for free-to-air receiver companies to implement PSIP guide data for OTA. The $40 free-after-rebate digital to analog converter box I have has this feature and it works great. I have yet to see a converter box without this feature! Kinda sad that a $400 satellite receiver like the Pansat 9200HD can not do what a free after rebate converter box can do. :(

It isn't that the boxes won't do it - there is no information being sent from the satellite.

I am aware that the satellites dont broadcast guide data for free content. I was referring to Over-The-Air, you know the ATSC signals you can pick up if you put a uhf/vhf antenna on your roof.

I'm not too well up on it, but I think TV Guide over the air is becoming available for OTA, too.
And so I would like to see the OTA side of these FTA receivers use that.

Not sure what to use for FTA guides... but an internet link (Ethernet) and a connection to one of the internet guide data bases would sure be nice.
And, it's possible TODAY ! Just nobody has done it!

The Coolsat 8000 originally did provide OTA guide info....but they forgot to put satellite software in the box

the software that gave both seemed to disable the OTA guide :(

there is a stand alone recording device that works much like the stand alone dvd recorder except that it can be easily uploaded to a pc via usb or lan or uploaded to other usb devices.

although it would be a drawback to a DVB/DVB-S/OTA device with DVR functions that worked

The TV guide is available OTA but they are not reliable. I don't have a DVR based on OTA EPG, but I often push the info button on my HDTV remote when I watch live and quite often the station just doesn't put the EPG on air. And here in SF bay area, I notice the EPG is off by an hour probably due to summer time. I think the reliability and availability of OTA EPG will cause a lot of recording problems if the DVR is based on it.
If you want a real solution free of monthly charge, PC based DVR seems still the only way to go. I built one 2 years ago with Beyond TV and it works very well. The nice thing about PC is that you can easily transfer the recording or expand the disk space. I bought a 500GB external disk recently and my recording time is over 50 hours now for HD. The HTPC gets the EPG from Internet which is lot more reliable than OTA EPG.

My point was that nobody has done either type of guide in stand-alone set top boxes.
I know about the guide solutions for PC-based recorders, and have plenty of computers if necessary.
I just don't choose to use one... or at least that was not the purpose of this thread.

Of course, it may come to that... :D

What's with these companies??
In case nobody told you, FTA satellite is something you do as a hobby, not as a all-in-one solution to your family's regular TV viewing needs. For that you really need a consumer solution like DISH or DIRECTV.

. . . then that leaves a lot of growth room and competition room for the FTA companies...
... without even going to the dark side. -

Whoever goes there first, will reap the rewards, then the me-too companies will follow (the money).

....
my sugestion wasn't pc based although a pc based one might be cheaper if you have the equipment ...

here's a link Coolsat CoolDirector
Thanks, I took a look at the Coosat site to see what it did.
The features don't exactly jump off the page at ya. - ;)
Once I read up on it, she seemed pretty nice, so I found someone selling it.
Goes for around $220, and that doesn't include a hard drive nor a tuner.
. . . no tuner... uhhhh... well, that axe'd it for me. -

Favorite feature: plays HD XviD - that'll be killer! - :up
IMO, that and HD DivX are the future.

I emailed Panarex about the over-the-air electronic program guide:

I understand that the FTA satellite channels do not transmit EPG data. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the program guide from local digital over-the-air stations that I pick up with a uhf antenna on my roof. I know that these stations are broadcasting EPG information since I have a GE 22730 digital converter box and it shows me a weeks worth of program guide data. My hdtv also shows me program guide data, but the pansat 9200HD does not show any guide data for over-the-air stations.

This is the way my local station are broadcasting the EPG:
Program and System Information Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So there is no way the Panarex engineers can extract the program guide
data from the PSIP information stream? Thank you.
Their reply:

Unfortunately the factory is not big company like Sam Sung , LG etc, therefore they does not have good resource information of off air channel EPG.

my diamond worked great for recording my wife shows in HD yesterday. Freaked me out though. 1hr HD = 160GB. dang. it was all from OTA and looks fantastic!! well worth every penny of the $100 the box cost me.
