I have a 301 and have not gotten a replacement card for mine yet. I know someone else that has a 301 and never got a replacement and another person with a 3700 and 301 and also did not get theirs replaced either.

This is nothing more than an attempt to take all the hackers by surprise and to increase their 4th quarter numbers!

The last card swap we did took about a year to get everyone over to the new system, and during the people who where stealing service knew what was coming and made plans to either pay for the service or find another way to steal.

If they can pull off this card swap in the next 30-60 days before there is a hack available, they are going to take away TV from I would guess half a million people who have FTA receivers, a majority of which are in Canada.

Its gonna lead to one big surge in activations in the month of December, as everyone is going to be forced to go ligit and pay for service!

Before a hack is available ? Are you implying that if people lose their TV, instead of waiting for a hack, they'll become paying customers ?

By Dish PR claims - yes, but who knows real numbers ?
Signal Integrity Dept for sure interesting for inflating the counts of FTA receivers, hackers, freeTVers, etc.

From what I am reading in these threads on this site, some believe that the new system will be hacked soon if it is not hacked already. I guess they release this overseas first before it is released here and that gives the hackers additional time to figure it out. How long has it been overseas now? That is like a head start for them here. If Dish becomes unhackable after this then they will target DirecTv even more and I am sure there are lots of DirecTv receivers and cards floating around.

I often questioned the intelligence behind making EA require the G3 smart card. No mater what scheme you use to encrypt anything, it is only a matter of time before someone breaks it. Seems to me that the less time you give someone to break the encryption the greater the effect it will have on people who pirate the signal. All this did was give the hackers a head start on being able to break the encryption before it affected the majority of their "customers". Kudos to dish for speeding up the process so that there will actually be a period of time when the average pirate will not have an option to receive dish network for free. Who brought the coffee to the guys who's been asleep at the wheel up there?

There are many who will never pay for TV, even if it takes thousands of hours to hack the system. But I do think some hack that would pay. I think there eventaually develops a sort of "critical mass" when the hack gets so cheap and easy that many will do it that would have paid. Even if it gets quickly broken, it will be a little bit before we see that critical mass develop again.

As for the EA, Bell has been running the new encription for a while, so they have already had the head start there.

The system does not need to be unbreakable. It just needs to be annoying hard to the average user. If a few hundred hard core hackers want to do it, Dish really does not care. They just care when a ton of average people can get the service almost as easily as subscribing.

We can only hope.

I am going to have to start reading those forums again. They are hysterical at how pissed they get when they get knocked out. They slam Charlie all the time. I don't think that these people will be joining E* if they got knocked out. they would be more likely to get cable or D*.

I also believe that they can and will hack D* if E* becomes to tough to hack.

From what I read I thought that it was basically one guy breaking code on E* before

Well, the big problem that we can all see are the hacked FTA boxes.

They can be sold legally without any bad software on them, and it only takes a few minutes to turn them into "free dish" boxes.

And since even the stupidest user can go about getting that done, its market has grown (as we all know) and makes signal pirating even worse.

Which would explain why they are being so aggressive this time around with a card swap. Hopefully there are certain sections on the card that can not be emulated, the majority of pirates will be knocked out, even if the card is hacked.

Why? They will need a card, and then things get technical. No longer is it click one button and have stolen tv, its involved, and out of the reach of many users.

Sure, there would still be a problem, but it would be much less rampant once the hacked FTA boxes are out of the picture.

And, we know its not the FTA boxes, no matter how much everyone wants us to think, its the programming. I know I'm stating the obvious, but I just don't want someone to think I am anti-FTA, when I'm not, more so the software that is put on the boxes in which to obtain the programming illegally.

And, its been discussed before, some FTA manufacturers aren't 100% clean, who leaks info on how to program their boxes, who has programmers on staff doing just that, making the programs that can illegally decrypt the signal. Issue is, it can't be proven in court, at least not yet.

That was a bit of a long rant, and somewhat out of order, so ignore if if you wish!

And for what its worth, I still didnt get my G3 cards, and need them for all 3 of my DVR's!

my dad got his and his DVR's even told him that he needed to make the swap. I have been a customer for about twelve years and havent seen mine yet. not that I really care.

Exactly!

There is a point where the average Joe gets tired of hearing his wife and kids complain that they have no TV a few days out of the week where he will break down and subscribe.

The other thing you got to consider is I don't believe even if the new cards could be hacked they would work with the current FTA receivers due to the speed of the processer on the card. THIS MEANS EVERYONE WILL NEED NEW EQUIPMENT If FTA cannot be used, then they need to go to hacking the new DISH cards, and to be honest there is not a big supply of them out there since the only people who have the removable cards are paying customers!

Heck, I went through all the receivers in my office yesterday looking for 2 purple cards and I only found 2, the rest where imbeded inside of new receivers.

I remember in June of 2006 there was a 30 day period when all FTA crap went down and people went nuts! Unfortunatly the ROM 102 hack with the yellow cards was working, and everyone despritely tried to get their hands on yellow cards, and alot of people broke down and subscribed!

This is going to be 10 times worse than it was before, and I can't wait to see half of Canada go without TV :)

That processor speed limitation came from FTA dealers as urban legend when they likes to push out new FTA boxes - market saturated already, so they need to find such twist. It's known the card have small CPU what working (regardless ASIC) at 16 MHz max. So any modern CPU will outperform it well, include ASIC computations.

Here's the problem, Claude. And I've called you on this in the past. You don't seem to recognize that the vast majority of FTAers are legitimate. You also don't think that there is legitimate FTA, and that FTA is just a cover for piracy. You've said in the past that if the encryption was secured properly FTA would go away. I have news for you. It isn't. You're like one of those guys who like to muddy the waters by lumping legal and illegal immigration together. Then calling those who want to stop illegal immigration "anti-immigrant" because they know they can't win the debate any other way. FTA and piracy are not the same thing.

new smart cards

Today in the mail I got new smart cards to put into my Receivers, even though on both my receivers, there are internal smart cards. Does anyone know if Dish is going to get rid of the internal smart card system and just stick to physical smart cards?
