Alabama Crimson Tide Slighted by Oddsmakers, Opens as 10-Point 'Dog to Gators | Bleacher Report

Bama is a TEN-POINT UNDERDOG??

I've been critical how Bama is treated like a 7-5 team and everyoe views Florida as the Second Coming of Christ, but... seriously?

TEN-POINT UNDERDOGS?

Florida LOST a game (albeit to a not-so-bad Ole Miss team), yet everyone acts like this game will be a scrimmage for the supposedly almighty Gators?

I'm not buying into this "Florida's invincible" crap.

Let me give you a warning: remember when Kansas State beat a so-called 'Greatest team of all-time' in Oklahoma in the 2003 Big 12 Title game.

Just because a team is billed as UNSTOPPABLE doesn't give them a free pass!

The reason Bama is a 10 pt. dog to Florida is that the Vegas Oddsmakers have their own poll. It's based on a pretty basic rule, who have you beaten, and who your opponents have beaten.
Here's this weeks oddsmaker poll from Vegas Sports Consultants:

1. Florida 115.0
2. Oklahoma 114.3
3. Southern Cal 113.5
4. Texas 113.0
5. Penn State 110.5
5. Alabama 110.5
7. Texas Tech 109.3
8. Missouri 106.5
8. Ohio State 106.5
10. Georgia 105.0
11. Utah 104.8
12. Oklahoma State 104.7
13. Boise State 104.7
14. Texas Christian 104.1
15. Oregon 103.6
16. California 102.9
17. Mississippi 102.2
18. Cincinnati 101.8
19. West Virginia 101.6
20. Boston College 101.6
21. Iowa 101.5
22. Arizona 101.4
23. Oregon State 101.3
24. Boston College 101.1
24. Florida State 101.1
25. Pittsburgh 101.0
26. Nebraska 100.8
27. Georgia Tech 100.6
28. Kansas 100.5
29. Ball State 100.3
30. Brigham Young 100.0
30. Michigan State 100.0

As you can see, they VSC polls loves big conference schools and often overlooks a bad loss form them(see Missouri and Ball State) for a reason.....$$$$. People will take the "Hot" teams and follow the money.
"100" is the baseline number for establishing favorites.

Sabres ,one thing to keep in mind about the Pointspread as someone who used to deal with that nearly every day for 10 years.

The 10 point spread is not a prediction of the game ,or even an assessment that Florida is 10 points better than Bama on talent or coaching.

It's a number designed to draw equal money on both sides of the betting public.

My guess is that the spread will rise a half point or even a full point before coming down slightly as the game approaches this weekend.

I am suprised its that much too. I just hope the players take this to heart on saturday!

I cant wait for the game. Most anticipated game of the year for me. I really hope UF comes prepared and does not overlook Bama. I know Meyer and Teabow are not ones to do that, hell they wouldnt even talk past the citidal and FLAs 3rd and 4th stringers could of beat them. They do seem to focus on the game they play that week and not look ahead, but for some of these guys specially the seniors they want so bad to leave with a national title it maybe hard for them not to overlook bama..

Question: If FLA did not lose to ole miss.. And Both FLA and Alabama were undefeated.. Which would be in the #1 spot and which in #2 ? Because both being undefeated at this point would certainly make them 1/2 respectivly and after saturday whomever lost, only one would play for the title but why? They would still only be a one loss team, why does a one loss team drop below another one loss team simply because of WHEN their loss was, not who the loss was against. The BCS is junk.

Look how far tech dropped after losing to OK... How do they get below texas a team they beat? But how does OK get above texas a team they lost to? Go figure.

I am on the fence. i kinda like arguing and debating the bcs :) and I love that every single game matters. Id just prefer sometimes it gets decided on the field and not the pollsters.

IMO, I think Texas Tech gets left out of the BCS and Ohio State gets the at-large.

This might be bitter and this might sound a little cocky, but I truly feel this way:

Jimbo, Sandra, HD- your Buckeyes are NOWHERE as good as Texas Tech.

I'd like to see THE Ohio State take a trip to Lubbock, where defenses go to die!

Sadly, after the automatic bowl ties and championships, its comes down to $$$.

If we are talking about "deserving", then I'd say Boise State.....simply the fact that they won EVERY game and have no automatic bid. Both Texas tech and OSU had a shot at a auto bid and both teams blew it on the field.

More than likely, its going to be between Ohio state and Boise ST.

Putting all that aside....

Texas Tech would be ineligible for a at-large pick based off of two BSC rules:

1) No conference can have more that two teams (Either OU or Mizzu gets one automatically)

2) A top 4 ranked team (i.e. TEXAS) that DID NOT receive an automatic bid MUST be selected if there is a available bid (with the expanded BCS, kinda hard for #4 not to get a bid)

BTW....The last rule you can thank your B12 pals in Manhattan KS for :)

OU is too one-dimensional, IMO, to win a national title.

The Sooners are trying to go against history- no team has ever won a national title to my knowledge with the philosophy of 'throw the defense out the window- just score a bazillion points!'
I'm sorry, did I miss something? The high-scoring Texas Tech offense was only able to put up 21 points (which includes a last second, meaningless touchdown) on the defenseless Sooners. Everybody has a short memory about how good Tech is, and who they beat (Texas!).

You know what let OU beat the Cowboys Saturday night? Defense! Until the last 8 minutes of the game, it was effectively tied. Then OU's defense forced a fumble and it broke the spirit of the Cowboys.

Anybody expecting an upset of OU by Missouri, remember this: In an away game, OU beat the team that beat Missouri in Columbia. Add that to the two Missouri losses to OU last year, and the Tigers' prospects are pretty dismal.

Let me give you a warning, donnelly:

2003.

Oklahoma had an offense almost as good as this year.

Playing an overmatched team in the Big 12 Title game (Kansas State).

Only needed a win to play for the national title.

What happened?

I've got a better one: 65-21

And they did play for the national title after losing to K-State. That game was essentially meaningless.

Same thing happened with Ohio State and Michigan a few years back, they were 1 and 2, Michigan lost and was the one that should have played Ohio State again, but voters decided otherwise. (The SEC love fest I think had something to do with it).

Bucks lost ONE game early and dropped 10 spots.

We have 6 conference champs...
4 BCS bowl games plus the MNC game.
Or is it 5 BCS games and the MNC game ?

What I'm trying to figure out is, are there only 2 at large teams, or 4 ?
If there are 5 BSC games, thats 10 teams and only 6 automatic bids.

Anyone ?

Ramy,
I thought this was Kentucky's year to finally beat the Vols. It was not to be on "Phillip Fulmer Day".

If it hadn't been his last game they wouldn't have been so pumped up for the game.
