hey guys i know direcTV and tivo made up, any ideal when they will deploy to users?

Thanks
Jeff

Probably be not until mid 2010 when they go back to mass producing them. ( as least that is some of the scuttlebutt around the old water cooler in the tivo circles )

Judging that D* isnt going to CES, and how recent the agreement was, I doubt they are beyond the prototype phase at this point, let alone software development.

When the new D* Tivo was announced a few months ago 2nd half 2009 was mentioned as the time line. However, with the lack of any further talk about this from D* I doubt we will see it before the end of 2009.

And the fact that DirecTV has canceled all non critical capital projects who knows. So it may be canceled or delayed since I highly doubt DirecTV views it as top critical project for them. If it's "on track" then you would bet that either Tivo or DirecTV would be showing it at CES. If it's not at CES then end of this year is in a big question. Most were thinking first half of 2010 anyway. If not at CES then I would agree of mid 2010 at the earliest, assuming it's not canceled or delayed further. Besides, when has Tivo or DirecTV ever released anything on time? :)

DTV is really not participating in CES this year? Ironically, I saw the very first DTV setup at CES & subsequently purchased the equipment/subscription right there. The days of RCA & USSB (free for three months) are long since gone; can't say I miss the RCA boxes much though.

Maybe Directv Tivo is not a top priority for D* but rest assured it is for TiVo.

Certainly. But it's funded by DirecTV obviously and since they are in budget cut mode and only keeping the most critical projects going if DirecTV feels the new Tivo isn't one of those critical projects then they won't fund it or at the least delay it. ;)

Soooo .... at the risk of sounding stupid, does this mean that eventually we'll get stuff like dual line buffers in the HR200 ?

UB. :)

You can be assured that Tivo is footing close to all of this bill & this relationship will not be tabled because of DTV's budget restraints. What I'm wondering is how they will approach the fee's for multiple receivers. The whole idea in going proprietary was to generate the extra money/control & I can't imagine the same fee we pay currently will be applied towards a multi Tivo setup. I purchased a lifetime Tivo receiver for my sister & it was the easiest thing I ever setup & used but I can't imagine switching from my DTV setup I have now.

remember....times are gettin tuff out there and in order for direct tv to get some of that hard earned bucks...they are goin to have to be more inventive.....that is why the tivo thing be alive and in stream soon....

You can bet it is going to be more for the Tivo. My guess the amount you pay now for the extra receiver and additional 6.99 (group rate discount or same rate if you already have another tivo) to get the TIVO version. I don't think it will take very long. Tivo already has all they need software wise it will be the box development that slows them down. This will be their first MPEG4 receiver.

I still think instead of new boxes they are going to tivoize the HR2x series boxes.

They may come out with a new box model first but it will quickly be realized that it nothing then a hr2x hardware wise and that we start seeing tivo software releases via the CE program.

I hope you're right. That would be exciting.

I dont know. They might be holding it close to the vest.

What is D* going to do when everyone who has a HR2x or a R15+ reciever wants to jump ship for a new tivo box. I saw the R15 when it first came out till now and I have to say there has been big improvements. But Direct currently has the worst DVR in the satellite industry... There are FTA boxes that work better made by much smaller companies. I would even go as far as to say that is is the 2nd worst in Cable/Satellite industry in the US.

I can say right now all the mad HR10-250 who were forced to upgrade to a HR2x reciever were given the choice say to pay 50 or even 75 dollar one time fee to have tivo on there hr2x over dtv current software most would pay.

I would personally pay 199 the cost of a new lease box to have the UTV UI on a HR2x I would not go over 100 for a Tivo ui. This is from the guy who morally objects to paying for a Access Card.

DTV and Tivo could make some serious money by charging for a hr2x tivo software upgrade.

You waaaayyyyy overestimate the "want" for Tivo. There were only at their peak 250K HR10's. Based on the Citi call yesterday there are over 5.5 million DirecTV subs now with HD (most of which have the DVR). And growing. And Tivo stand alone subs keep on going down. Basically other then a few hard core Tivo'ites the general public does not care one bit what the UI is on their DVR, just so long as they have one. A new HD DirecTivo will certainly get some subs, but not really all that many compared to the big numbers.

DirecTV isn't hurting at all. There is no hurry on their part.

During the Citi call yesterday DirecTV didn't mention Tivo at all and nobody asked a question about it. DirecTV hasn't said a peep about the Tivo deal since it was announced over 6 months ago.

During the same Citi conference Tivo only mentioned the deal once and they they "hoped" it would be out next year. That would be 2010. You can bet if Tivo doesn't show this new box at CES this week that it won't be out until mid 2010 at the earliest.

Meanwhile DirecTV has 5.5 million subs with HD, 99% of them without Tivo, and growing by leaps and bounds every quarter, estimated to be 70% of their sub base in 2 years.

It's great that DirecTV plans to offer a Tivo option. But people need to get it in their head that DirecTV doesn't need Tivo at all. Tivo needs DirecTV in a huge way. And the only reason this deal was even made is because Tivo is going to take most of the risk and DirecTV gets a cut. Note that there will be a surcharge for the Tivo unit above and beyond the DVR fee. Thus that is where most of the cost will go. So even if that's $5 a month *most* people will just take whatever they get from DirecTV, they won't pay extra. All DVRs are Tivo to the general public. Can't tell you how many people I know with a non Tivo DVR that all think they have a Tivo. It's kinda funny actually. :)
